Busy Gamer Review - Halo 3: ODST

Busy Gamer Review

Too busy to devote 12+ hours a day to your gaming habit? Here's a review that's sensitive to your needs: Short and focused on just the things that a busy gamer like you really needs to know.

Busy Gamer Review - Halo 3: ODST

Reviewed On: Xbox 360.

Halo 3: ODST
"Mal, uh, Nathan, I mean Buck! Cover me!"
In a Nutshell: The latest - and shortest - entry in the Halo saga, but with a film noir stylistic twist. Oh, and you're not Master Chief anymore. Instead, you play a noob recruit who aspires to be as handy in battle as a Spartan. No more magical armor or healing powers; you're going to have to learn to duck and cover, search for health packs and pick your fights with greater caution if you want to get through this on anything higher than easy. Which, by the way, is the level I played - Easy. Something I never thought I would do, but given the save game (more on that shortly) and my desire to actually make progress in the brief times allotted to me, I decided to go for the version that "practically plays itself."

And yeah, for the most part, it kind of does. I mean, Easy doesn't have to mean "long stretches with absolutely NOTHING to do except ooh and aah at the scenery," does it? The difference between Easy and Normal is HUGE. There needs to be a smaller chasm between the two here. Send in some enemies, throw some firefights at me - but don't make it so insanely difficult that I can't make progress. Better yet, let me save anywhere. Because being forced to search for a checkpoint, rather than allowing me to just find a place to hide and save my game, had a lot more to do with me choosing Easy than my abilities as a Halo player. I'm fine with getting beat down - just let me save my progress so that I can leave when I need to, or just quit and come back later without having to start all over.

Learning Curve: Seasoned Halo players shouldn't have too much trouble picking this one up in terms of button mashing but, strategy-wise, it's a whole new game. No more running in guns ablazing with the option to duck and recover. When you get hurt, you stay hurt until you heal - which requires finding a healing station. (You can't take it with you!) The weapons are generally the same as in previous games, as is the two-weapon limit. The enemy list is also generally the same, with a few upgrades and design tweaks.

If you're new to the series, learning the moves should be relatively easy, especially for FPS vets. This is one game that does not require you to learn eighty different ways to pummel the enemy, nor do you need to master a weapon before you can pick it up. Point, shoot, rinse, repeat. You can also beat down enemies with most weapons. The Needler (aka pink death!) is particularly useful as a beat-down machine.

The Save Game: As I stated earlier, you can't save anywhere - you have to find a checkpoint. Fortunately, just crossing the threshold of a checkpoint (entering a building or new region, for instance) will give you a save. I shouldn't have to wander an extra 20 minutes, or worse, backtrack, just to save my game, though. I have a hard drive. I hazard to say most people do, or at least a memory unit. Let me save my game anywhere. Note that this ability did not hurt Fallout 3 sales one bit... and that is one big-ass game save.

Family Factor: Uh, no. Unless by family you mean allowing your teenagers to pwn you in multiplayer. This one is not for the kids, folks.

Buy, Rent or Skip? Depends on how you plan to use it. I beat the game in just under a month, and that was only playing every few days. (Albeit some rather long sessions.) The creators admit it's about 8-12 hours of gameplay, and it's less if you just plow through it. If you just want to beat the main mission and move on, I'd either plan on a long rental (or a weekend when the kids are away) or borrow it. If you are into multiplayer, by all means, buy.

If you act fast and enter here, you might just win it!

Personally, I've already moved on to Assassin's Creed II.

On a Personal Note: I started playing Halo back before I was a busy gamer (e.g., before I had a kid), managed to get into a Halo 2 multiplayer beta (the only time I've enjoyed playing deathmatch modes), and kind of dropped out midway through Halo 3 when my game got corrupted right after a checkpoint that took a week to finish. So I was rather ambivalent about ODST when I heard it was coming out. While I don't feel a strong need to go back to Halo 3, I did really like ODST. It just left me feeling a little nostalgic for the very first time I played Halo. You only experience the Flood for the first time once - and I can still remember the deep feelings of fear, horror and exhilaration it inspired. I didn't get that from ODST, but I did find it highly enjoyable.

Also, the voice roster for this game is phenomenal, as usual. But this one is extra special for me, because three - count 'em, three - actors from the Firefly/Serenity 'Verse (Nathan "Mal" Fillion, Alan "Wash" Tudyk, and Adam "Not one of those Baldwins, but I am Jane" Baldwin) makes it extra special. Being a huge Firefly fan, it was both thrilling and somewhat apropos to hear these voices floating through space.

Be Careful Out There - This may get you banned from Xbox Live

Xbox Live's Stephen Toulouse (Stepto on Twitter) has put gamers on notice that performing the so-called Javelin glitch in Modern Warfare 2 that causes you and your foes to die as one will lead to Xbox Live suspensions of 24 hours to two weeks. This announcement came soon after Penny Arcade's Mike Krahulik called someone out for performing the juvenile attack. Here's what the glitch looks and how to do it (just don't, at least not on the Xbox 360!):

The game will be patched soon, but until then, as Stepto says, "Play fair everyone." Unless you have a PS3 or PC: Sony hasn't taken a specific stance on this glitch (and I seem to recall a Sony community rep on a PAX '09 panel saying they aren't big with the ban hammer), and I'd expect the PC version to be open season as always...

Free Stuff Friday - Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian

Night at the Museum: Battle of the SmithsonianLast week's giveaway was something for you (or at least the one lucky of you who took it!). This week is a gift for that younger someone in your life (daughter, nephew, cousin): Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian for Xbox 360.

Our 7-year-old loves these movies, and especially reveled in his visit to the actual Smithsonian museums last summer where exhibits and props from the film were on full display (great cross-marketing!). He promptly spent his gift money from grandma on the DS version of this game, and for the holidays we're wrapping up a second copy of this 360 version for him (shh, it's a surprise!).

We picked this up for you to pass along, unless you're a fan of these movies and games, and then by all means - enter for yourself. As long as you promise to share. 'Tis the season, right?

Enter here:

Gamewatcher - Child's Play Charity Auction, Year 6

Child's Play Dinner 2009: Mario quilt at the live auction
Mario quilt at Child's Play 2009 auction (more and bigger pix)
Another year, another Child's Play charity auction. We've attended every one to date (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008) because it's a cause we truly support and believe in. This year we felt the economic pinch and expected to walk away empty handed.

Apparently we weren't the only ones - overall bidding seemed low with no $10,000+ items. As a result, we actually won some goodies in the silent auction (our first bids got away, but we did finally prevail with the PopCap and Ubisoft game and goody bundles. This marks the second time we've won Peggle at an auction (the first was in 2007), and now we're swimming in games, Chuzzles and other surprises that we'll share in future Free Stuff Friday giveaways.

Child's Play Dinner 2009: 8-bit Resident Evil art
8-bit Resident Evil art - the one that got away!
But back to the auction. Big hits were a Super Mario quilt ("An opportunity to wrap yourself in your own childhood," quipped co-founder Jerry Holkins) that went for $4000 and a $6,000 seat at the Penny Arcade guys D&D game ("Anybody want to be murdered, by me?" taunted Mike Krahulik.)

A fully loaded Xbox 360 with every Rock Band song released so far, plus all of the Rock Band games sold for $1700, and another 360 that includes every Xbox Live Arcade game to date landed $1900.
Child's Play Dinner 2009: PopCap pack
PopCap pack - one of two prizes we won at silent auction!
Some lucky winner with a spare $2000 gets to be an honorary member of the Xbox Live Enforcement Crew during a 6-hour tour of Xbox HQ. Mike noted, "You can spend the day there ruining people's lives."

The cheapest live auction item was a $400 custom decorated Ragnaros Noob from Blizzard. A Bungie Studio tour to preview Halo: Reach netted $2700, a skeeball machine was worth $4600 to someone with a lot of free space, a $2000 Mystery Box proved to be a 52-inch TV and the annual PA strip appearance was had at the bargain price of $6900 - down from $10K last year and $20K in 2005. Finally, a $6500 song written by the PA crew with Harmonix musicians will be immortalized in Rock Band and proceeds from its eventual sale via the soon-to-launch Rock Band Network will benefit NEXT year's Child's Play. Awesome!

The total evening's take was only $191,000 - a bit less than the $200K+ raised at past year's dinners. Seems like the high rollers and big corporate sponsors stayed away, or made their donations and called it a day. The bigger news was that the overall campaign broke $1 million BEFORE the auction started, which is a welcome first! Grassroots efforts seem to be really making a difference. Last year, the auction pushed the total just above the $900K mark (they ultimately broke their $1 million goal by year's end).

Still, a good night for a good cause. It was fun, and they finished early (before 9:30 p.m).

GrrlGotGame - What the %$&#'s a Zynga? Those Facebook games your friends are all playing

ZyngaIf you've been on Facebook for more than five minutes lately, you've probably seen notices that your friends are handing out guns, flowers and cookies, leveling up their amusement parks, moving up the mob ladder and spending a helluva lot of time down on the farm. And you probably laughed as you joyfully ignored their attempts to sucker you in, too.

But eventually, you will be assimilated. I'm here to save you the pain, the anguish, the anxiety of figuring out which one will become your personal time suck.

Why we play
Zynga games are, first and foremost, about relationships. Oh sure, you're raising fish/crops/Hell - but realistically, what really gets you going is those sweet little words, "you have gifts waiting!" The more you give, the more you receive. And the more your friends level up, the better the booty you might score. So it behooves you to join a mob or get neighbors (add friends to your gaming network), and scratch those proverbial backs. Just remember the cardinal rules of not pissing your friends off.

Good Citizenship Rules of Social Gaming:

Cafe World
"Who's no longer playing Cafe World?
This guy!"
  1. Don't recruit friends from within the game, no matter how much the game asks you to do so. Your friends know these games exist. No, really, they do. If they want to play, they'll join you eventually. Instead, look for those who are already playing and appear to have active games and connect with them.
  2. Look for active game friends when sending gifts. Every Zynga game will offer you the option to spam all your friends with gifts, and it always defaults to All Facebook Friends - which includes people who are not playing. Choose the tab for friends who ARE playing the game, and select only the ones who are actively sending you things so you skip the ones who have abandoned play.
  3. Pay attention to your friends' hints. If they are posting announcements to their Facebook feeds, sending you gifts, or leaving messages on your boards (not all games offer this option), they are still active. If the crops are rotten, fish are floating or the amusement park is a dead zone, they've probably lost interest. Also, if they send you a particular gift, they probably want the same thing or something similar back. Right now, the big thing on Farmville is holiday presents. But once people max out what they can use, they'll switch to something else.
  4. Avoid "accidental" spamming, and when you do, undo. This has happened to me in almost every game - watch the right hand corner for alert messages. If you see a message you don't want really to send (e.g., "GrrlGotGame wants you to join her Mafia!"), quickly hit undo to stop it from going out. In Café World, for instance, you can draft a non-player friend to wait tables for you - but you'll notify them and invite them to the game if you're not careful.
  5. Don't go crazy with the feed announcements. The games advertise themselves in your Facebook feed everytime you announce you are leveling up, just iced someone, raised a new fish, etc. While some of these offer cash rewards or prizes ("Share the wealth," for example), others just say, "Hey, I'm playing this game!" Don't go overboard. Sharing the wealth/weapons/animals/etc = good. Screaming "I'm a level 8! Now I'm a level 9! No 10! in the span of five minutes = way to lose friends.
  6. And finally, don't click the ads, kids. Yes, Zynga is the company you've heard about recently. And yes, there may still be some scammy ads here and there.
So for you ADD gamers out here, to summarize... the same rules apply as they would in the real world: Don't give strangers your credit card number or personal information. Play nice with your friends. Don't spam your pals. And if you're going to abandon your fish tank, sell the fish first, OK? It really bothers me to see Nemo floating at the top of your tanks.

Get it? Got it? Good. Now, on with the show.

Mafia Wars Mafia Wars
We'll start with the game I understand least, both in the sense of what to do and, frankly, why so many of my friends play it: Mafia Wars. This seems to be the least interactive of all the games, as all you do is click on boxes and read messages telling you what happened. Based on other Zynga games, I expected at least a cartoon shoot out in the city. Instead, I got cartoon pictures of tommy guns I think I bought (hard to tell) and text telling me I killed a mobster, and now I'm too tired to do anything.

Conclusion: Bored now.

Tips and Tricks - Farmville and Cafe World

Farmville - box me in!Consider this the sidebar to GrrlGotGame's in-depth look at Zynga games. If you do play Farmville or Cafe World (and you probably should), here are some quick tips to help you make the most of your time in the games.

For Farmville:

  • Box your avatar in. This will keep him/her from walking all over to perform tasks, which saves a TON of time. Find the spot in the middle of the screen where your avatar always appears, and surround it with hay bales (or fences, but bales are cheaper and you can isolate the exact spot, saving more space for crops). When you upgrade your farm, the center will move so you'll need to reposition everything around your new spawn point.
  • Put trees along one of the back boundaries of your farm so they don't interfere with harvesting and planting crops.
  • If you have trouble selecting an animal to harvest its bounty or brush coins out of its fur (or whatever it is you do to cats and reindeer now), aim for the pink indicator over its head. It's much easier to select with animals that are crowded or in the back of the pack.
  • Hay bales make nice decorations and count toward your ribbons. Use them to line your crop sections and get your item count up toward your ribbons at the same time.
  • Check for gifts (and send some daily to let friends know you're still active). Gifts don't automatically appear in your gift box, you have to go to the Requests section of Facebook and painstakingly accept them one at a time. The price we pay for free virtual stuff in meaningless timewaster games!
In Cafe World, the hardest thing to do is decorating (everything else is too simplistic, if you ask me - this ain't Cooking Mama or Diner Dash).

Cafe World - save that game!Be sure to click the little gray save button (looks like a floppy disc, if anyone still remembers what those are) on the right side of your game window after making any changes. For some reason, the game doesn't auto-save your customizations. If you do lose them, any lost items will be stored in your Customize menu where you can retrieve them.

When playing, always keep counters open for food that's nearly done. If you have a lot of time before dishes are ready, raid your gifts or look for friends offering "tastings" to collect food to serve during downtime. It appears food in your gift box never goes bad, while food on your stove will - so plan accordingly. Also, if you have more of a food that's already on the counter being served, it will get added to same counter so don't be afraid to put it out right away.

Free Stuff Friday - Pick and Win: PopCap Games

This week we have FIVE (count 'em!) prizes, all culled from the PopCap Pack that we won at the 6th Child's Play Charity Auction this week. Turns out we already had all but two of the games in the pack, though we did win some other cool collectibles - some of which we're keeping.

But we are now swimming in plushy chuzzles (I remember a time when I coveted them; now they're like tribbles invading our home!) so each winner will get at least one chuzzle and possibly some other bonus items. It'll be a surprise!

You do need to pick which game you're playing for:

Bookworm Adventures for PC Peggle Plants vs. Zombies for PC and Mac Zuma's Revenge for PC PopCap Arcade Vol 2 for Xbox 360

  • Bookworm Adventures for PC - Bookworm but with RPG elements; you spell words to do battle!
  • Peggle for PC - You know the drill by now, it's like pachinko only... not. PopCap's best game since Bejeweled!
  • Plants vs. Zombies for PC and Mac - Our latest obsession! It's tower defense, but you manage weaponized plants that protect you from zombies!
  • Zuma's Revenge for PC - The new sequel to the classic ball popping game! GrrlGotGame actually just got this for her birthday, or you wouldn't be seeing it here.
  • PopCap Arcade Vol. 2 for Xbox 360 - This DRM-free collection lets you play Feeding Frenzy 2, Heavy Weapon and Peggle on any 360 as long as you have the disc in the drive and the games installed to a drive or card. Well, maybe that's still DRM, but at least it's not locked to one console.
No pick, no prize. Here's how to enter:

Busy Gamer Review - Zuma's Revenge

Busy Gamer Review

Too busy to devote 12+ hours a day to your gaming habit? Here's a review that's sensitive to your needs: Short and focused on just the things that a busy gamer like you really needs to know.

Busy Gamer Review - Zuma's Revenge

Reviewed On: PC. Also available for Mac.

Zuma's Revenge In a Nutshell: It's the famous match-3 shooter game featuring a frog and a vengeful tikki statue, with some welcome new twists. The basics: Your shooter is a stone frog, your targets are multi-colored marbles. Match 3 or more, you score and the meter fills. New balls stop coming when the meter is full. The game ends when you either clear the board or the balls reach the drain (i.e., you lose the level), whichever comes first. Balls periodically convert to power-ups that activate upon matching. Holdovers from the original Zuma include Reverse balls (the balls roll back away from the dreaded drain), Slow balls and Bombs.

Zuma's Revenge ups the ante with some spectacular new power-ups including one that shoots cannonballs in three directions (you choose the general trajectory), laser eyes that take out every ball you shoot as long as the frog looks radioactive and a nuke ball that takes out every ball of the same color. Another nice addition: The frog has been freed! Well, occasionally, anyway. He still stays planted dead center for many levels, but you get to move him side-to-side occasionally as well. My favorite new feature is the challenging and fun Boss Battle, complete with title card. Nice!

Some other notable new features: The game now has checkpoints (bless you, PopCap), meaning you no longer go all the way to the beginning if lose all your lives. (This is a major, major beef of mine. More on that shortly.) Zuma's Revenge also features a "colorblind assist" option that converts green balls to grey (it's not easy seeing green, at least for me) and support for 1920 x 1200 hi-resolution. I selected the hi-res option and got a firm but polite note that it wasn't a super-great idea, but if you really want to do it, your machine will reboot. I appreciate the game warning me that this might, you know, totally screw up my game and/or computer. And that I'd have to reboot.

The game includes the usual assortment of unlockables, including a hand-killing Challenge mode that is almost too difficult to actually be fun.

Learning Curve: Zuma vets will be able to jump in without problems. Even newbies will be able to pick up the game's basics quickly and enjoy early levels. Once the brain scrambling double-threads begin, the game gets significantly tougher.

The Save Game: Awesome save system. The game will auto-save for you whenever you finish a level, and it saves precisely where you are when you quit (balls frozen in mid-air). Why can't everyone do this?

Family Factor: Completely family friendly. Our 6-year-old loves to watch me play, and has taken a shot (so to speak) himself.

Buy, Try or Skip? If you love match-3 marble shooters, this is an easy decision: Buy! There's always the 60-minute trial if you're on the fence. Act fast and enter our PopCap giveaway this week, and you might just win it!

On a Personal Note:I have been playing the original Zuma on Xbox 360 since the day it came out. That's a lot of years, kids. It has come to be known as my nemesis (spoken in Hiro's accent from "Heroes") because I just can't seem to beat the very last round of levels. (I'm not alone in this, by the way. We should have our own support group!) Our son has seen me boot it many times over the years, and thoughtfully picked out Zuma's Revenge for me as a birthday present earlier this month. It has proven to be one of the best gifts anyone has given me!

The Buzz - Assassin's Creed II DLC details

Assassin's Creed IIUbisoft revealed details of its Assassin's Creed II downloadable content for PS3 and Xbox 360, which fills in two DNA strands that are inaccessible in the retail release of the game.

First up is the Battle of Forli in January with six missions for $4. You'll help your lady friend and historical figure Caterina Sforza and philosopher/writer Niccolo Machiavelli in defending her little dump of a city. Then, sometime in February, Bonfire of the Vanities will land and try hard to suck $5 more from your pocket by offering 10 more missions, a new maneuver called the spring jump, and a chance to cross swords with deranged monk Girolamo Savonarola.

Worth the $9? Almost certainly. It's among the more reasonably priced downloadable content, even if it feels a little like it was lifted from the game just to be sold separately. However, there's a hidden cost: Hard drive space. Expect each to be at least 1GB. Or you could wait for the (almost certainly) inevitable Game of the Year Edition sometime later in 2010...

After a 10+ year hiatus, a new Tex Murphy game is rumored to be in the works. For now, you can get your first taste free...

Free Stuff Friday - Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X Thrustmaster Limited Edition Bundle

Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X Thrustmaster Limited Edition BundleThis week's giveaway is a special holiday gift valued at $55 - at least that's the cheapest we could find it for. We won it at the Child's Play Charity Auction as part of the Ubisoft Pack, a bizarre collection of games that apparently no one else wanted. Which is why we won.

Our goal was to find something nice to win while helping a noble cause, and - once again - our over-extension is your gain. We're keeping the other games (for now at least) as bonus Santa gifts. Alas, we really have no use for Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X, a PC flight combat game complete with the very impressive Thrustmaster T.16000M joystick. But we expect you do, so here's you chance for a grand prize and that feeling that you (indirectly) did something to help a truly great charity.

Still not sold? The game is set in 2014, which is THE FUTURE. So you get to experience time travel (sort of). And since you're clearly wondering, H.A.W.X means "High Altitude Warfare eXperimental squadron" - so you're a kind of military Guinea pig. It's compelling! Oh, and Yahtzee rather liked it, which you'll realize is high praise if you follow him.

Oh, you want it now. Here's how to enter:

Free Stuff Instant Win - Tom Clancy's EndWar novel

Tom Clancy's EndWar novelThere's one more item we received in our Ubisoft bundle that we don't have much need for: the Tom Clancy's EndWar novel by David Michaels. Actually, from what we've learned through some sleuthing on the Interwebz, Michaels is a pseudonym that obscures the identity of the real author: Grant Blackwood, best known for his Briggs Tanner series of military thrillers.

So even if you don't win, consider yourself "learned."

This giveaway is a bonus for those busy gamers who are vigilant and/or lucky. We'll ship the prize out to the first qualified person who posts a comment. The usual rules apply, except that there is no random drawing. You can't win two consecutive instant wins (Lara is out on this one), so if this isn't something you really want you should pass on this and wait for the next. We plan to do more of these from time to time in addition to the regular weekly drawings. Follow me on Twitter if you want a head's up before we post Instant Wins.

Tips and Tricks - Forza Motorsport 3

Forza Motorsport 3I've been a Forza fan since the beginning. If you're new to the series, it's basically a simulation racer that's been tweaked to be just arcade-y enough to be fun. Forza Motorsport 3 continues the tradition with some new twists that rather change the gameplay, and not always for the best. The game is also hampered by some seriously long load times - so if you have the space to spare after you add all of the bonus disc's cars and tracks, install the game to your Xbox 360 hard drive.

Here are a few tips to get you started:

  • Watch the line. As with previous games in the series, you have the option to display a line that shows where the sweet spot for driving is and whether to accelerate, maintain speed or brake as it changes from green to yellow and then red. Advanced players can turn off this driving aid to earn more points.
  • Mod your ride. If you're losing races, you may have the wrong vehicle or, more likely, your car doesn't have the right performance level to compete. Forza 3 offers the option to automatically upgrade your car to the max within your budget, which is tempting but can severely eat away at your available credits without always giving you the mods that could really make a difference. Getting that adjustable gearbox is an important mod since it permits you to...
  • Tweak your parts. Boosting your gearbox ratios improves acceleration (at a cost to your maximum speed), which can make a big difference in a twisty track where you spend most of your time speeding up out of turns and little to no time maxxing out on long straightaways. Here's an adjustment you can make right away (without any mods): Add a little air to your tires. I usually add 2 psi to my front tires to gain a little more control in turns. Once you get deep into the game, races will become challenging and you will need to dig into your bag of grease monkey tricks to optimize your car for each track. Read the description of what each adjustable part does and spend some time on the test track confirming that your settings are working before going back into races. For further assistance, this Tuning and Upgrades guide can help.
  • Roll back time. Yeah, the game verges on sci-fi with a new feature that lets you run back the past few seconds so you can correct a driving mistake. This won't save you if your car is vastly underperforming, but can fix a tight race where one bad turn is going to lose it for you. There seems to be a limit to when and how much you can use this feature, but it feels so much like cheating that I try not to anyway.
The game does have one neat time saver, which is the ability to quickly downgrade your favorite car for a given race after you've modded it up. You will have to go back and reupgrade it later, so save your settings before doing this. You'll have the advantage of knowing that your car will be at the maximum performance for a level after downgrading, so you should have an easy time with the race.

As nice as all of the tune-up descriptions are, as an amateur racing fan I find I have to refer to them a lot when I'd rather be able to select more user friendly choices - like whether I want my car to be more slide-y or tight in turns. It would be nice if there were a way to quickly visualize how a car will perform after each adjustment rather than having to tweak and test, tweak and test. Someday, maybe.

In my limited playtime, I quickly gravitated to a slick little Alfa Romeo Brera Italia Independent that was awarded to me early in the game and I've been running it consistently to victory by modding it up and down to qualify for different classes of races. I will need to find additional cars for challenges that won't permit my little Italian sports car to enter. So far, I am having fun with it - possibly more fun than the second Forza game, in which I hit a performance wall about halfway through that exceeded my ability to easily work through it so I stopped playing. You could say it tested my patience and lost! Let's hope that doesn't happen again here...

SSX Tricky    Elf Bowling 7 1/7
This week, you have another choice. If you have access to a PS2 (or PS3 with backward compatibility), you're in for a treat: one of the best snowboarding games ever, SSX Tricky. We enjoyed this game so much that we broke an original Xbox controller playing it. We suspect you might wear out a DualShock with this and not regret it one little bit.

If you don't have a PS2, we have a treat for your PC: Elf Bowling 7 1/7: The Last Insult. This little holiday gem from Mumbo Jumbo includes iceberg and pirate ship lanes and the elves themselves serve as your pins. And they taunt you! If you've never played an Elf Bowling game, they're fun and funny; a great way to blow off a little post-holiday steam.

Here's how to enter:

Tips and Tricks - Borderlands

Borderlands We finally cracked what makes Borderlands fun. It wasn't easy, and it took a few days. But after slogging away at splitscreen co-op and wondering for far too long what all the fuss was about, we get it.

Borderlands is an FPS RPG. It's as if Fallout 3, Halo and BioShock somehow mated and created a beautiful cel-shaded child. But as beautiful as it is, it's also shallow and complex at the same time. On the one hand, it's a very lightweight RPG with a few skill trees you can build as you level up. It's also disjointed and confusing and has more weapons than you can possibly handle, with confusing names and even more confusing menus to buy, sell and compare them. The menus are even harder to follow when playing splitscreen because you have to horizontally scroll to view them, even on a 42-inch widescreen TV.

Also, some of the initial challenges are out of balance. Early on, you encounter a guy named Bone Head. If you're not at least a level 10, you should run off, do some side missions and level up (11-12 is apparently ideal). Turns out, if you're significantly below an enemies level, you do negligible damage to them regardless of your weapon's stats.

Tonight, we went off on some overlapping side quests in Skag Gully and shot us some mutant dogs. And it was great. After a bit of practice, we rarely died and if we did get in trouble, defeating an enemy brought us back. More missions like these, please! We could do this all day.

Here are a few tips to help you get where we are faster:

  • Places with loot respawn each time you quit and reload your game, so go on a short expedition to grab cash, weapons and ammo each time you start until you get financially secure. Sell any cheap weapons you don't need for an added cash boost.
  • Once you have a shield, use it like you did in Halo. If it gets zapped, try to duck behind some cover until it comes back up. Upgrade your shield whenever you can.
  • If you're near death, you'll see "Fight For Your Life" on the screen. You could just respawn, but if there are weak or weakened foes nearby, keep attacking. If you defeat one, you'll get your second wind and be back in the game (albeit severely weakened, so try to grab some health right away if you can!).
  • You can heal a co-op buddy who is fighting for his life. But before you attempt to revive him, make sure the area is clear of nearby enemies. If you're interrupted, you'll have to start again - and you're vulnerable while applying the healing touch.
  • Learn your weapons so you can match ammo to them. Repeaters take pistol ammo. Shotguns work best up close, so they're great for taking down packs of skags but not so good at picking off distant enemies with shields. Grenades can help you take down an enemy's shields if he's not vastly higher in level than you. Also, you can crouch, so try to find a sniping position where you can get down out of the line of fire to let your shields regenerate and then jump up to take your next shot.
  • Health kits are pretty worthless since they live in your backpack, which isn't convenient to open in a firefight. (Hey, just like real life! Uh, who voted for the realism in a cartoon-y videogame shooter?!) Instead, rely on your shield and any instant health that enemies drop on the ground.
  • Activate and learn your special skills as soon as you can. Soldiers can summon a shielded turret and sirens can phasewalk (turn invisible), dealing a blast of damage both when they vanish and reappear. Other teammates have skills as well, but these are the ones we've tried.
  • Strafe and, if you're playing co-op, cover your teammates. Dodge and attack. Some skags spit acid at you. Learn to predict and avoid these attacks. Also, you'll improve your chance of a critical hit if you shoot a skag in the head while it's howling at you. Awesome!
That's all we have for now. Have fun and be safe in post-apocalyptic Pandora...

Audiophile - Zelda Reorchestrated

Zelda Reorchestrated You're not a true gamer geek unless you want to have this right now: a 6-year project to create an orchestral version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time score, now completed.

That's right, this music is downloadable now - and, even though it's freely given with no sign of profit for the musicians' hard work, it could easily become a victim of corporate cease and desist. So grab it now at zreomusic.com. The 82-track album is 162MB. If you downloaded earlier versions, be sure to get the final release as it has been painstakingly remixed and a quarter of the songs remade in the last month...
