PlayStation 3 Round-up - Home beta now open, free Resistance 1 map packs, Sackboy Santa and Mercenaries pack

Sony finally opened up the PlayStation Home beta to all online PlayStation 3 owners worldwide. Simply go to your dashboard and look for the new Home icon. Install the 77MB download and agree to permanently cede 3GB of hard drive space and you're in. Connections were dodgy at first but seemed to recover quickly. After the LittleBigPlanet fiasco, Sony knows it has to keep up with server demand. You can create your avatar, pick from a few rudimentary costume choices (makes the Xbox 360 clothing selection look impressive) and join the people milling, chatting and dancing about the various locales, shop at the Mall, bowl or watch some movies. Each locale requires a separate install (hence the preallocated space) but you can choose to get it in the background while you continue messing around wherever you are. It's free, it's beta and it has potential. The only mystery is why Sony didn't launch it in November to counter Microsoft's big dashboard refresh if they were so close.

Take a look. While you're online with your PlayStation 3, here's what you'll find new this week in the PlayStation Store:

  • Resistance: Fall of Man Map Packs (both free, but won't work with Resistance 2)
  • Echochrome update that adds trophies and 1000 user-generated levels (launch the full game while online to patch)
