Remember how Nintendo is offering a code to download the Wii Speak channel when you buy the room-to-room chat peripheral? It seems so obviously part of the new trend in console game marketing: Offer something in the box to entice purchase of new units rather than secondhand goods. Well, Nintendo is now promising that secondhand Wii Speak buyers can get the channel simply by contacting customer service - at least in Europe where a UK rep promised codes will be provided to all comers. Sounds a little like spin: If they really wanted everyone to have it, why not just offer it as a free download via Wii Shop. Only the die-hards will know to call customer service, and only a fool puts trust in a process that requires an underpaid support rep to deliver customer service. If you call, be prepared to escalate...
