WTF?! - Obama and Palin to be playable in Mercenaries 2

This qualifies as possibly the most ludicrous political tie-in for a game yet: EA is planning to add Barack Obama and Sarah Palin as playable characters in Mercenaries 2: World in Flames. I could describe it at length, but you simply won't believe it until you see it:

Consider this your reminder to vote today! No word on when this will hit, or whether it will be free or for pay...

Whoops! - EA truncates Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 CD keys

If you get Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 for the PC, you may find that your CD activation key doesn't work. If so, count the key length: A "small number" of customers received codes that are one character short of the 20 required to activate the game. Now you could just call EA support, but they'd much rather you turn this into a meta-game (no doubt to shrink their support costs): Guess the missing character. There are only 36 possibilities, so you can just append and try until you get it right. EA has since updated their support page to omit this option, but if you're curious here is the text they had earlier this week:

"There is currently a work around that may allow you to bypass this issue. Since you have the first 19 characters of the code already, you can basically try "guessing" the last character. To do this, simply enter your existing code, and then for the last character, try the letters A-Z, and then the numbers 0-9. You should eventually get the right combination, and be able to play the game."

Last Chance - Enter for Fallout 3 or Halo 3 poster

Fallout 3 PAX posterHalo 3 teaser poster
You only have until 8:01 a.m. Pacific Time on Thursday to try to win one of these great posters: either the rare Fallout 3 poster designed by Penny Arcade artist Mike Krahulik, or the somewhat more common Halo 3 teaser poster. Either will adorn your barren walls or tastefully decorated game room equally well.

At this writing there are 92 entries, which makes the odds better than 1 in 50 that you could win one of the prizes. Not bad, and it takes only one lucky draw to make you the happy owner of one of these beauties. If you enter, now would be a good time to white list my domain in case you win. Recently, I had to give away a prize to the first runner up, most likely because the original winner's prize notification got trapped in his spam folder.

Music Game Round-up - Untitled Beatles Project, World Tour patch, On Tour Decades tracks and Lips

The big news for music game fans is that The Beatles music library has been licensed to MTV and Harmonix for use in a new rhythm game that appears will use the Rock Band instruments but won't be an expansion to that series. At first blush, this sounds a little like a standalone version of what NeverSoft did for Tool in Guitar Hero: World Tour - a custom game experience that somewhat extends the artistry within the core gaming engine. But perhaps not. We're still waiting for an official announcement with details about the gameplay.

Fortunately, there is plenty of other music game news to keep us busy until we get spoonfed more details.

Misery Loves Company - Fallout 3 glitches on all platforms

If you're an Elder Scrolls veteran, you may consider the Fallout 3 issues discovered to date (particularly on the Xbox 360) to be nothing to write home about. But they are still aggravating, especially if you're immersed in the deep and compelling story and they pull you right back out into the real world. Here's what people are reporting and what you can might be able to do about it:

  • Xbox 360: Mostly freezing and graphical glitches. Clearing your hard drive cache seems to help (if you don't mind wiping out all of those game patches), and reports indicate that saving the entire game to run from your hard drive (one of the features of the new dashboard update due next week) helps even more. Also, littering the countryside with objects could be an issue. Best to leave things alone that you can't carry and dispose of extraneous objects by selling them or placing them in containers/corpses. These tips should tide you over until the inevitable patch - unless you red ring. If that happens, it's not due to any game glitch but because you played too much and your 360 overheated.

  • PS3: Mostly frame rate, stuttering and texture loading problems. Receiving messages from friends during games may cause freezing, so you may want to disable them and, while you're at, don't access the XMB. Also disconnect all other game controllers and make sure the one you're playing with is set to Controller 1. There are also reports that you may not be able to cancel the VATS targeting or shoot if all parts of a target are at zero percent. If this happens, see if you can switch to another target.

  • PC:This version was patched, and some report it worked better without the update. So if the game is crashing, you might downgrade - at least until the next patch. Other suggestions that people claim have helped: updating audio and video drivers (K-Lite codecs in particular have been called out) and removing SecuROM protection installed by another game such as BioShock that may be causing a conflict.
Whichever version you play, save early and often. Don't overwrite or delete saves until you're sure you'll no longer need them. Don't count on autosave entirely since every time you enter or leave a place you'll trigger a new one, overwriting the last. If a problem arises, you may need to backtrack 1-2 saves. Personally, I've had maybe 1-2 load screen freezes and that's it. But then I've trained myself with hundreds of hours in buggy Morrowind (and Oblivion, to a lesser extent) to play in such a way that the world doesn't fill up with unnecessary objects...

Do Some Good - Child's Play 2008

Child's PlayAlthough it's truly a year-round charity, as with most philanthropy the biggest surge in Child's Play giving is around the holidays. The 2008 campaign is now underway to help as many kids as possible through toys, books and cash distributed to more than 45 children's hospitals around the world. Last year's tally was $1.3 million, so it's going to take some serious effort to beat that high score and prove once and for all that gamers aren't the antisocial miscreants the media so commonly portrays us as. This is our #1 charity - even though we live in Seattle, I donate to the Children's Hospital in Washington, D.C., which helped me when I was little, and GrrlGotGame gives to the one in Dallas. We hope you can join us, even if it's just a small toy or book...

Free Stuff Friday - Exit for PSP

Exit I'm always on the lookout for great deals on games, and this week I found Exit for PSP priced so inexpensive that I could afford to pick up two copies - one for me, and one to give away. (Hey, it may be cheap, but nothing beats free, right?)

This puzzle/platformer is something of a sleeper; I played the demo on Xbox Live Arcade and rather liked it but never bought it because I just have too many games to play on Arcade as it is. Not so for the PSP, where this game is a bit more of a standout. So if you have a PSP sitting idle, why not put it to good use? It won't take but a moment of your time.

Here's how to enter:

Stupid Marketing Tricks - Used Wii Speaks won't get channel

Wii SpeakNintendo has wised up to the whole used game and peripheral thing eating its dinner, and has decided to take action by cutting off its potential installed base of room-to-room chatters. Here's the deal: You'll need to buy a new Wii Speak microphone to get a one-time use download code for the Wii Speak channel (due in December). If you pick up a secondhand Wii Speak without the code, you will still be able to use it in enabled games (so far: Animal Crossing). We think Nintendo made a sad misjudgment here. Those who play Animal Crossing will be playing it pretty often, and thus won't have much need for the standalone chat channel - they'll probably just sell the codes on eBay. And gamers haven't exactly been clamoring for this sort of unconventional and only mildly innovative online chat capability. While nice to have, most won't pay a premium for it - particularly in this economy. All this move does is ensure that fewer people will have it, which reduces the chances that it will reach its full potential or even become something that developers want to spend time and money building into their games. Way to go...

Wii Stuff - Pesky channel update, Strong Bad 4 and Space Invaders, plus Bolt and Lasagna demos

This week if you want to get to the Nintendo (Marketing) Channel to stream some videos or download DS demos, you'll need to accept a 122 block channel update first. No, the DS demos won't be any easier to access - they're still hidden and available only as a reward for opting in to share your gameplay habits. No, you won't be free of the annoying automatic paging of the video list, nor is there an option to turn it off. All I could find was a new opt-in prompting me to allow commercial messages from Nintendo. Hey, isn't that ALL that this channel is - commercial messages?! Guess the lawyers mandated this pesky update - though it would have been nice to get some improvements thrown in too.

Here's what's new on the Wii:

  • WiiWare: Strong Bad Episode 4: Dangeresque 3 ($10) and Target Toss Pro: Bags ($7)
  • Virtual Console: Space Invaders: The Original Game for SNES ($8) and Forgotten Worlds for Sega Genesis ($8)
  • DS Demos: Bolt, Personal Trainer: Cooking Lasagna, Prince of Persia: The Fallen King and several repeats including Kung Fu Panda: Legendary Warriors and TouchMaster 2
  • Game Videos: Animal Crossing: City Folk, Club Penguin: Elite Penguin Force, Helix, Personal Trainer: Cooking, Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party, Rock Band AC/DC Live Track Pack, Skate It, Strong Bad Episode 4, Target Toss Pro: Bags and Wii Music

Wii Update - New Menu update blocks homebrew, speeds SD card access

Turns our yesterday's Wii channel update did have a new feature: Peer recommendations. You can find out what games others with similar tastes enjoyed, and see how people vote on whether titles are casual, hardcore, and best played alone or online with friends.

This channel path was followed by another Wii Menu update (v3.4) that, surprisingly, is optional. If you decline it, you'll preserve any hacked save files, which will be deleted when you accept. Basically, it's an attack on homebrew and custom channels. If you skip it, you will miss out on enhanced parental controls, USB keyboard support for the Mii Channel, and improved system functions including zippier SD card transfer speeds - rumored to be the first step toward the promised Wii storage solution next year...

First Look - The New Xbox (360) Experience

New Xbox ExperienceVeterans of this site know I've invested a lot of time and energy into critiquing the various console dashboards. The Xbox 360 - after a bumpy start and a few hurdles along the way - has been my favorite interface for playing games and accessing media. So I was skeptical when I heard about this New Xbox Experience that would revolutionize the way I interact with my console.

Even though I followed this update closely and previewed it at PAX 2008, it was with a few pangs that I said goodbye last night to my 360's Blades-style interface. It took about 20-30 minutes to fully install, and afterwards treated me to a pretty though over-the-top video welcome:

Misery Loves Company - New Xbox Experience has the hiccups

Microsoft is describing it as "hiccups," but gamers trying to explore all of the new features after updating their Xbox 360 dashboards have encountered a variety of problems:

  • The most common issue is access to Xbox Live Marketplace, which was non-existent much of the day and is now spotty at best.
  • The new capability to select and buy downloads directly from the Web version of Marketplace has been down much of the day and now seems to throw more errors than results. I was told that a demo of a new community game was not for my region, though it was more than happy to sell me the full version for $10. And some featured content links are just dead.
  • New premium themes priced at $3.13 each are optimized for the new dashboard layout, which is good since many of your old themes are now mostly obscured or just plain silly. There are a few new ones preloaded in your theme selector (Xbox 360, Spectrum, Day and Night), so at least those can tide you over while you save up for the more expensive themes that you can see less of.
The semi-good news:

  • The downloadable Netflix channel - one of the few things that seems to be easy to get - now requires a mystery update, which is blissfully quick. This feature is free for Gold members who already have a qualified Netflix plan, and you can activate up to four "instant" playback devices a year. As mentioned in yesterday's First Look, all of the Sony movies are gone but at least Netflix labels them so you can remove them or bump them to the end in case they ever come back or you get the opportunity to watch them on a PC or non-Xbox 360 device. I lost eight titles overnight: Spider-Man 3, Gattaca, Steamboy, Reign Over Me, Ghost Rider, Jumanji, The Water Horse and American Pop (the last one I have on laserdisc, but this would save me from having to dig it out of the basement).
  • Access to the Photo Party channel, another free bonus for Gold members, also seems to be readily nabbed if you use the big dashboard ad to find it.
  • Pictures of your avatars can be downloaded and shared easily, except the site that provides these isn't working too well. Just replace GAMERTAG with your gamertag in the following URL: http://avatar.xboxlive.com/avatar/GAMERTAG/avatar-body.png - if it works, be sure to save a local copy rather than link direct (which is probably what is causing the access problems).
  • Microsoft announced more avatar outfits are coming in the form of clothes theme packs, which will probably be mostly for pay though we can hope for some free and sponsored content. And can we get some more noses, chins and ears, please? And what's with all of the realistic skin colors? My son wants a blue alien tint; he was good at school all day, so why can't he have it?

Whoa! - Halo 3 is so good, it runs better off disc than hard drive

So you downloaded the New Xbox Experience on your Xbox 360 and immediately ripped Halo 3 to your hard drive, hoping to get some almost intangible advantage over those n00bs you so desperately want to pwn.. But something's been nagging you, clawing at the back of your mind, ever since but you just don't want to admit it. Time to face facts: The game ran better off the disc! Yeah, it turns out there is no benefit to installing some Xbox 360 games to your hard drive, and Halo 3 is one of them. In fact, it's slower that way. The reason is that the game already caches maps and data to your hard drive, and apparently caching from one part of the hard drive to another is slower than simply doing it from the DVD. Bungie isn't likely to patch the game to alter this, so the game is about as good as it's going to get. Hey, at least now you can get back about 7GB of storage...

Free Stuff Friday - Battles of Prince of Persia for DS

Battles of Prince of Persia This week Free Stuff Friday continues the run on games I found priced to move at Fry's, where I picked up one for me and another to share with the busy gamer community. Battles of Prince of Persia is a card battle/strategy game, which usually isn't my cup of tea. But this one looked interesting and is set in the Prince of Persia universe - and it's free for one lucky winner, so what's not to like about that.

This is also a chance for me to gauge interest in the PSP vs. DS platforms among my readers, so DS fans represent! I have a couple more DS games I may queue up in coming weeks, and at least one more PSP game on the way (maybe more depending on response!).

Here's how to enter:

Xbox Live Marketplace - Premium themes, community games, free Star Trek movie stuff and much more

This week, it's a whole new Marketplace! With the launch of the New Xbox 360 Experience dashboard, there are several new wrinkles:

  1. You may not be able to get to Marketplace at all, or (now that traffic seems to have slowed and server capacity has no doubt been buffed) suffer long load times
  2. You can access Marketplace on the Web and remotely queue/purchase downloads, which will automatically come in the next time you boot your console.
  3. There's this new thing called a Premium Theme. These themes have not been well defined, but as best I can tell they cost more but offer only a single background image (unlike the traditional four with the previous Blades dashboard themes). But they do seem to contain new matching tableaus that appear behind your friends when you visit the new Friends avatar section. Contrary to early reports, there are no avatar costumes bundled with premium themes, which is a shame since it would probably help improve the value proposition and sales for both.
  4. Community games are now launched with 45 released at this writing. New titles have been added every day so far, and these generally less polished though often fun games are priced starting at $2.50 up to $10. Unlike with Xbox Live Arcade, trial versions are all time limited (you can only play a few minutes) and the games do not have achievements. Some noteworthy titles include Audiball (can be played with a Rock Band or Guitar Hero guitar), In The Pit (audio only game) and Easy Golf Course Architect (includes course editor and level sharing)
  5. A handful of games have in-game avatar support. So far, they include the newest Xbox Live Arcade game A Kingdom for Keflings and updated games Bomberman, Hardwood Hearts, Hardwood Spades and Uno
  6. There are free Netflix and Photo Party channels for Gold members only.
With that in mind, here's what is new for download on Xbox 360:

  • Need for Speed: Undercover Collector's Edition Upgrade ($10) which adds five cars, 12 track configurations and other extras
  • Guitar Hero: World Tour The Raconteurs Track Pack ($5.50 or $2 each) with "Consoler of the Lonely," "Hold Up" and "Salute Your Solution"

Xbox 360 Round-up - Netflix glitch, hard drive install guidance

The Xbox 360 dashboard replacement is a week old, and problems such as lengthy access times for Marketplace seem to be fading.

There is one noteworthy wrinkle if you have more than one hard drive and try to use Netflix. Swapping drives seems to require you to resync since the connection data is stored on the drive when you first set it up. If you get connection errors, this may be the cause. It's not clear if blessing a second drive on the same console counts toward your four device quota. With two consoles, I've already used half my quota and I'm loathe to test this in case I have another console failure. I just need to remember which hard drive to use for each.

It's worth noting that upgrading my DSL from 1.5Mbps to 3Mbps greatly improved Netflix video quality. To max out for HD video, I expect I'll need to go 6Mbps (beyond my current line quality, though I may be able to remedy this next year with some phone line rewiring and/or a dedicated DSL circuit).

One more Netflix note that no one seems to be reporting: In addition to Sony movies being inaccessible on Xbox 360 due to petty politics between console makers (UPDATE: Some of them are back, but not Spider-Man 3, Ghost Rider, Reign Over Me or The Water Horse), some titles (notably from Starz) have begun expiring from the instant play queue. So check your queue for movies and shows that are about to disappear and watch them first! If a movie does expire while you're watching it, you can continue as long as you pause but don't quit - this happened last night with They Live! As soon as it finished, I exited the movie and then tried to return but was blocked.

If you're wondering how many games you can fit on a hard drive, Stripesonfire.com has a helpful install chart that compiles the sizes so you determine how much space to free up. Games known to have huge speed improvements when run from the hard drive include:

  • Assassin's Creed
  • BioShock
  • Burnout Revenge
  • Dead Rising
  • Dead Space
  • The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
  • Fallout 3
  • Grand Theft Auto IV
  • Lost Odyssey
  • Mass Effect
  • Mirror's Edge
  • NBA 2K9
  • Ninja Gaiden II
  • The Orange Box (particularly Half-Life 2)
  • Smackdown vs RAW 2009
  • Soul Calibur IV
  • Tales of Vesperia
Alas, some games seem to suffer. As reported last week, Halo 3 was designed to cache data on the drive, so you actually lose 10 seconds on load times. Other games with reported issues include:

  • Gears of War 2 (small savings on load times, but adds stuttering during saves)
  • NBA Live 09 (stuttering)
  • Project Gotham Racing 4 (audio pops)

News Flash - Nintendo to (supposedly) offer Wii Speak channel on request

Remember how Nintendo is offering a code to download the Wii Speak channel when you buy the room-to-room chat peripheral? It seems so obviously part of the new trend in console game marketing: Offer something in the box to entice purchase of new units rather than secondhand goods. Well, Nintendo is now promising that secondhand Wii Speak buyers can get the channel simply by contacting customer service - at least in Europe where a UK rep promised codes will be provided to all comers. Sounds a little like spin: If they really wanted everyone to have it, why not just offer it as a free download via Wii Shop. Only the die-hards will know to call customer service, and only a fool puts trust in a process that requires an underpaid support rep to deliver customer service. If you call, be prepared to escalate...

Don't Buy That Guide! - Free Fallout 3 map may be all you need

Capital Wasteland in Fallout 3Lost in Fallout 3? Not surprising. The Capital Wasteland is an expansive place, and there are a lot of secrets hidden away in its raider- and radiation-laden hills and dells. Fortunately for you, there's now a fan-created Google Map of the place with 522 markers (at this writing) and growing. The map can show you where to find ammo and health or even the next stop on a quest. If you like exploring and mapping stuff yourself, well, don't use it as a resource - contribute! Adding new map entries earns you ranks and badges at the minimum, and top contributors may even take home semi-valuable prizes...

Free Stuff Friday - Perfect Dark Zero

Perfect Dark ZeroFlash back to three years ago last week: the Xbox 360 launch. What, you didn't stand in line for 6+ hours in the chill November of '05? Then you probably didn't get a launch bundle with Perfect Dark Zero.

And you've missed out, to some degree. While it didn't set the world on fire or prove to be the 360 system seller Microsoft had hoped for, the game is decent first-person shooter in the vein of GoldenEye 007 with a single-player story mode and many online multiplayer modes. For what it's worth, the Metacritic average score is 81 - a solid B-. Best of all, you can win it for free and try to collect the 1000 achievement points that the gamerscore whore lurking in your heart so deeply desires.

We ended up with two copies, and this one is still sealed. We're holding on to the other, so if you win the game and want to pwn me in a deathmatch, consider that an added bonus.

Here's how to enter:
