Blog - Beating the Endless Setlist on Rock Band

With the sequel right around the corner, GrrlGotGame and I decided to finally take on the 58-song Endless Setlist in Rock Band this Labor Day. The task took us about 5 hours of actual gameplay, but we started the endeavor mid-afternoon while our 5-year-old was still awake, pausing the game for dinner and to put our son to bed and then finishing up at a reasonable 10:40 p.m.

I know that I'm overdue to post my Penny Arcade Expo notes (which will have to wait one more day) but one thing I can share now is that there will be NO PAUSING if you want a similar achievement in Rock Band 2. The achievement for that 84-song continuous playlist is named "Bladder of Steel," though they might have more aptly called it "Guys Who Can Pee In a Cup" because not many people can go an estimated 8 hours without a bathroom break unless they prepare for the challenge by becoming dangerously dehydrated (at the risk of passing out). But I digress.

Despite our efforts to improve our skills over the past year, we were only confident enough to take on the setlist on Medium. Such is the lot of the busy gamer, who can't play and practice every day. But even so, it wasn't a complete cakewalk. With GrrlGotGame on vocals and me on guitar, here are our highlights:

Blog - Penny Arcade Expo 2008 experience lacking, but worthwhile in places

PAX 2008: The Penny Arcade unofficial mascot takes a break from juicing fruit
The Penny Arcade unofficial mascot
takes a break from juicing fruit
Penny Arcade 2008 was probably our least favorite PAX yet (and we've been to all of 'em), but there were a few really cool things that we enjoyed. Overall, the show was not busy gamer friendly - if you couldn't camp out for popular sessions or demo stations, you missed out. Even the swag wasn't forthcoming without a significant time commitment - for instance, EA would give you a T-shirt only if you visited every one of their demo stations and got a "passport" stamped to prove it. We've been spoiled by past shows where the swag was free flowing and you could walk right into keynotes and other popular sessions even after they'd started.

Price Drop - Xbox 360 cheaper than Wii (sort of)

Starting this Friday, September 5, the rumored Xbox 360 price cut becomes a reality:

  • Xbox 360 Arcade: $200
  • Xbox 360 Core: $300
  • Xbox 360 Elite: $400
This puts the low-end Xbox 360 at a cheaper initial price than the $250 Nintendo Wii, at least until you add-on a hard drive (as manyinevitably will). It's hard to compare the very different consoles since the Wii has 512 MB built-in memory for storage, and the Xbox 360 Arcade comes with a 256 MB memory card. However, the sheer volume of Xbox Live Marketplace content might necessitate the need for a $60-150 hard drive faster than you might shell out for a $30-50 SD card for your overflowing Wii Channel, Virtual Console and/or WiiWare downloads...

Announcing: "Free Stuff Friday"

Busy Gamer News is going to go through some changes this year to improve the appearance, content, community and overall enjoyment of the site - and, by extension, your busy gamer lifestyle. The first new thing kicks off this week: Free Stuff Friday.

Every Friday at approximately 12:01 a.m. Pacific Time, I'll post a giveaway. To enter, simply enter a comment - just one. It can say whatever you want as long as it's not an ad or profane. At the end of the entry period, we'll randomly pick a comment and contact the poster via e-mail to get a mailing address for the prize.

Pretty simple, right? There are some sweepstakes rules - so take a look now so you'll be ready. The first prize is a Penny Arcade Expo Swag Bag that contains a sampling of the freebies we picked up at the show last weekend. So if you missed PAX, enter to win the cool gimmes you would have gotten if you had been able to attend!

Patch This Game - Rock Band

The new Rock Band patch that installs when you boot the game on Xbox 360 adds some important fixes and features:

  • Export songs. From the Options menu, select Export. You'll be prompted to pay $5 to export 55 of the 58 songs (all except Enter Sandman, Paranoid and Run to the Hills. (For those not up to the math, that means 139 songs can be yours in Rock Band 2 not counting any downloaded tracks.)
  • Adds support for Rock Band 2 downloadable content. You'll need this if you don't buy Rock Band 2 but want to download new songs after its Sept 15 release - including some of the newly announced albums: "The Colour and the Shape" by Foo Fighters (yes!), "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" by Red Hot Chili Peppers (double yes!), "Nothing's Shocking" by Jane's Addiction, "Texas Flood" by Stevie Ray Vaughn, "Peace Sells... But Who's Buying" by Megadeth and a No Doubt "Best Of" collection
  • Vocals fix for songs with "talking parts." If you had problems with these songs ("Sabotage" for instance), try them again after patching your game.
  • Gold stars are easier/achievable. Apparently, all of those songs that weren't possible to "gold star" on Expert are now possible, and songs that were do-able are now a little easier.
  • Even faster loading. The last patch sped up the load times if you have a lot of downloaded songs, and this makes it even faster.
The PS3 didn't get the patch yet, though they aren't expecting Rock Band 2 until October...

Wii Stuff - Spore Creatures DS demo, Groovin' Blocks, Final Soldier and Cho Aniki

This week's Wii updates include repeats of previous DS demos, a new WiiWare game, two Virtual Console games and some videos:

  • WiiWare: Musical rhythm puzzler Groovin' Blocks ($8)
  • Virtual Console: TurboGrafx16 2-fer: Vertical scroll shooter Final Soldier ($7) and shooter Cho Aniki ($9)
  • DS Demos: All repeats, including Spore Creatures and the unengaging Mystery Case Files: MillionHeir - which actually looks potentially good based on the marketing video posted last week, but the demo only features a tiny sliver of gameplay with no story or mini-games to engage you
  • Game Videos: Commando: Steel Disaster, Dragon Quest IV, Groovin' Blocks, Helix, My Secret World, Need for Speed: Undercover and Red Bull BC One
Full disclosure: I'm an ex-Big Fish Games staffer who might be characterized as mildly disgruntled, but in all fairness the demo plays much like the demo for their first game in the series, Mystery Case Files: Huntsville. It doesn't show off any of the new touch screen puzzle mechanics beyond hidden objects, and it fails to use the story to grab you. Fail...

R.I.P. - Ensemble Studios

The folks who brought you Age of Empires (arguably the real-time strategy game that moved the genre mainstream) will be closing up shop next year after they complete Halo Wars. Apparently Microsoft has tired of Dallas-based Ensemble Studios and will be sending it the way of FASA (makers of the MechWarrior series and Shadowrun), which they closed down last year. Makes you wonder who's next...

Act Fast! - Resistance 2 public beta accepting applications

The Resistance 2 beta is accepting applications for a few good gamers, but by most accounts it will be very few. So if you have a PS3 and a broadband connection, you'd better enter your request right now. If it doesn't work out, you can still pay to play later - you'll probably get in around the same time...

Pre-order Goodies - LittleBigPlanet

LittleBigPlanet Kratos SackboyIf you're going to buy LittleBigPlanet this October, you have an important decision to make: which store to pre-order it from. Depending on your choice, you'll get a different exclusive item:

  • In-game God of War Kratos costume (GameStop)
  • In-game Heavenly Sword Nariko costume (Best Buy)
  • A LittleBigPouch made of burlap (Game Crazy)
  • The LittleBigStickerBook (Circuit City)
  • A BradyGames Creator Mini-Guide (Amazon.com)
I think the choices are pretty well stack-ranked above - most people will choose an in-game costume based on their gaming preference (the various costume parts can even be mixed and matched with other outfit choices!) or maybe, if you prefer tangibles, a real world bag or sticker collection. A few might go for the mini-guide, but it's sure to be a teaser for the official game guide and offer less advice than you can find online for free. Speaking of stuff you can get on the 'Net for free, the LittleBigPlanet manual is already available for download...

PlayStation Store - Pain expansion, Jeopardy and free Colbert song for Rock Band

  • Rock Band tracks "Charlene (I’m Right Behind You)" by Stephen Colbert (free) and the All That Remains Pack ($3 or $1 each for a limited time) with "Chiron," "This Calling" and "Two Weeks"
  • PSP: Field Commander ($15)
  • Demos: FIFA 09 and Guitar Hero: Aerosmith
  • Game Videos: Blitz: The League II, Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway, FIFA 09, Golden Axe: Beast Rider, Legendary, Need For Speed: Undercover, NHL 09 and Saints Row 2
  • Themes: Pain Amusement Park and characters, Mirror's Edge and Need for Speed: Undercover

Free Stuff Friday - Dead or Alive 4, still sealed

Dead or Alive 4If you missed out on all of the high-kicking action of Dead or Alive 4 on Xbox 360, here's your chance to get it for free. The game is notable for introducing a female Spartan (her name is Nicole) from the Halo universe in a way that almost made sense (certainly more believable that Darth or Yoda). And it contains arguably the most attractive men and women in fighting games. And, now that series creator Tomonobu Itagaki has left Tecmo, it's probably the last one we'll see. We bought two copies of the game, thinking we'd play it on different consoles at the same time. We never even cracked the second copy, instead opting to both play together and separately on the "nice TV," and we forgot to return it. Our mistake is your gain.

BONUS: If you win the prize and want to kick my ass on Xbox Live, you'll get your chance.

Song Watch - Guitar Hero: World Tour

Forget all of those rumors and purported leaked song lists. Activision finally released the full list of Guitar Hero: World Tour songs, and they seem very proud that they included two more than Rock Band 2 is releasing with next week (well, before the 20 bonus tracks that Harmonix is planning to offer to settle the score). Here are the 86 songs:

Audiophile - Castle Crashers music available for free download

It's not a traditional soundtrack, but a fan of Castle Crashers has compiled links to 19 tracks from the game on Newgrounds.com - where you can listen to them with Flash visualizer accompaniment and even download the MP3s for free. The music is by various composers, and each has its own feel - but if you love the game, you'll no doubt want to load these onto your portable music player of choice...

Patch Your PS3 - Life With PlayStation launched

Life With PlayStationSo it's not the PlayStation Home, but Sony released its also overdue Life With PlayStation today. The service isn't a PlayStation 3 system update but rather a replacement for Folding@home, that protein-processing program that's trying to cure cancer and other diseases. Now it also promises to deliver your Google News headlines, Weather Channel forecasts and other unspecified "content and channels" to "further enhance the world of entertainment made possible by PS3." We'll see if this glossier knockoff of the Wii News and Weather channels can live up to all the hyped up marketing speak. If the update seems like it's really small, that's because it's actually a two-step process: It only takes a couple minutes for the first patch to download and run, but then you have to go back to Folding@home and download the 126MB application. At least NOT downloading it won't block your access to the PlayStation Store, the way most PS3 updates do...

The $20 version adds historical campaign mode where you can race against Washington and Lincoln, try different scenarios including an alien world, play as Hilary, Huckabee and others, randomize gameplay elements and even download updates as political events unfold. Give it a try for free...

Free Stuff Friday - Halo Trading Cards Bonus Box

Halo Trading Cards Bonus BoxThis week, here's a little something for the Halo fans: a sealed Bonus Box of Halo Trading Cards - six packs of seven, for a total of 42 cards. Since it's still sealed, I can't say for sure whether it contains any Motion Cards or Foil Cards, but the odds (1:12 and 1:6, respectively) are with you.

While I am a fan of Halo (among other first-person shooters), I collect enough stuff already. So if you collect cards and/or love Halo, they are yours to win if you're lucky.

PlayStation Store - Burnout Paradise Bikes (free), Megadeth album (mostly) and Fracture and Mercenaries 2 demos

This week, there's a lot to be thankful for on the PlayStation Network. Though It's worth noting that the Megadeth album for the Rock Band games lacks the title track, so you'll have to shell out for Rock Band 2 if you want the complete album. Here's what's new:

BLOG: Disaster Strikes - My Alienware laptop dies

The Alienware laptop that I used to run my business and manage my blog for the past year and a half wouldn't come on this morning. After hours of troubleshooting with tech support, it was determined that it wasn't coming back without repair. Needless to say, posts will be erratic this week though I still expect to have Free Stuff Friday this week...

Stupid Marketing Tricks - Call of Duty: World At War's 'Day 1 Advantage'

The news that Call of Duty: World At War (due in November) will have preorder and special edition only weapon unlocks will either have you running to your nearest GameStop or cancelling your plans to buy the game in disgust. Dubbed the "Day 1 Advantage," Activision revealed that if you preorder at GameStop you'll get instant access to the M1A1 Carbine Assault Rifle, which you would otherwise have to unlock through gameplay. And if you cough up an extra $20 for the collector's edition, there's an exclusive FG 42 Machine Gun with your name on it, plus double multiplayer experience points for a week and a "uniquely colored clan tag." Which means if you had planned to shave a few bucks off the game at Costco or earn some points by buying it at Best Buy, you might as well get used to being pwned by people with more money than you...

Patch This Game - Halo 3

Halo 3 was updated the day my laptop died, adding playlist ratings (now separate from your global rating, so you can more accurately compare yourself with others on the same playlist) and 10 new achievements. Three of the achievements are worth zero points, and the other seven total 250 and reward your prowess on Legendary multiplayer maps. The patch does not include any of the rumored Forge map editor enhancements, though it does add new and improved ways for Bungie to ban cheaters. Consider yourself warned...

Free Stuff Friday - Jet Set Radio Future and Sega GT

Jet Set Radio Future and Sega GTWhen the original Xbox needed a boost, Microsoft put together a bundle that included two killer games on a single disc: Jet Set Radio Future and Sega GT. Jet Set Radio Future is one of the most fun and innovative games from the last generation with rail-grinding action, cool moves, graffiti tagging, deep exploration and a great J pop soundtrack. Sega GT is a solid, challenging racing title. Both play on the Xbox 360 thanks to backward compatibility updates. Xbox 360 Round-up - Xbox Live downtime Monday, plus Duke Nukem 3D, Moving Pictures and not much else on Marketplace

Before we get to the newest Xbox Live Marketplace downloads (it's a light week), be aware that Xbox Live and much of Xbox.com will be down for maintenance all day Monday, September 29. You won't see any changes right away, this just paves the way for the fall dashboard overhaul rumored to be out in November. So if you've been putting off your License Transfers and/or recovery, do it now or you may find yourself unable to access some of your purchased or downloaded games, add-ons and videos while the service is offline. While you're at it, don't forget to boot up Halo 3 and get your title update and then download the new "Keep It Clean" teaser video for an apparent campaign expansion. Here's what you'll find if you login:

  • Arcade: Duke Nukem 3D ($10)
  • Rock Band/Rock Band 2 Moving Pictures album ($11 or $2 each) with seven songs, and additional tracks ($2 each) "Sorrow" by Bad Religion, "She Sells Sanctuary" by The Cult, "Bandage" by Hot Hot Heat, "Shoot the Runner" by Kasabian, "You’re No Rock n’ Roll Fun" by Sleater Kinney and "Love Spreads" by Stone Roses
  • Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 Firestone Country Club ($7.50)
  • Infinite Undiscovery A Voucher (free) that provides access to item creation materials not normally sold in the in-game shops
  • Soul Calibur IV Customization Equipment 2 ($1.88)
  • Tales of Vesperia costume and item packs ($2.50 to $3.75 each)
  • Game Videos: Duke Nukem 3D, Halo 3 new campaign experience and Legendary
  • Themes: Duke Nukem 3D, Midnight Club and Soul Calibur IV ($1.88)
  • Pictures: Duke Nukem 3D ($1.75 each) and Midnight Club ($1)

Free Stuff Friday - Don't miss chance to win Jet Set Radio Future, Sega GT

Jet Set Radio Future and Sega GTSince there are only two entries (another coin flip!) and I've been catching up on work and unable to promote the contest, I'm extending entries until 12:01 a.m. Thursday. I'm still working out what to give away next time; hopefully if entries pick up it will be something pretty cool.

Although if you never played it, Jet Set Radio Future is one of the coolest experiences ever. Rail grinding around cel-shaded Tokyo, tagging corrupt police and collecting paint cans to a J pop soundtrack is even more fun than mere words can describe. And it will play on the Xbox 360!

First Look - Grand Theft Auto IV for PC

Grand Theft Auto IV for PCGrand Theft Auto IV is getting a PC release this November under the still awkward-sounding Games for Windows Live monicker. The good news is that Microsoft is promising service updates to coincide with the title's release including "a redesigned game interface, out-of-game client and marketplace." Wonder if this means you'll be able to buy the Xbox 360 episodic expansions on the PC as well. They are due, coincidentally, in November. If you're wondering if your PC is powerful enough to run the game, here are the recommended requirements:

  • Dual core processor, Intel Pentium D or better
  • 2GB RAM
  • 512MB Direct3D 10 compatible video card or Direct3D 9 card compatible with Shader
  • 18GB free hard disk space
  • DVD-ROM dual-layer drive
