PlayStation Store - Gran Turismo 5 Prologue update adds pay-for-race TV

The big PlayStation 3 news this week (apart from PixelJunk Eden, love it or hate it) is the Gran Turismo 5 Prologue patch which primarily adds GTTV - a big pay-per-download service for racing junkies. For the first two weeks, shows will be $1 each and then jump to $2. The update also offers some gameplay fixes including improved online collision physics, more Time Trial tires and a correction to penalty judgments. If overpriced racing demos that upsell you stuff to watch instead of play aren't your game, here's what you'll find in the PlayStation Store:

  • PixelJunk Eden ($10)
  • Soul Calibur IV Customization Equipment 1 ($1.50) and Stage Music from the original Soul Calibur ($1 each or $15 for all 17 tracks)
  • Rock Band tracks ($1) "Yomp" by thenewno2 and ($2 each) "This is It" by Staind, "They Say" by Scars on Broadway and "Electric Crown" by Testament
  • Demos: FaceBreaker, Lego Indiana Jones and Madden NFL 09
  • Game Videos: Beijing 2008, Bionic Commando Rearmed, The Last Guy and Vampire Rain Altered Species, plus some more AST Dew Tour clips
  • Themes: Killzone 2 and PixelJunk Eden
  • Wallpaper: Siren: Blood Curse, Soul Calibur IV and Street Fighter IV

Word of warning: Castle Crashers is rumored to bust the $20 Arcade price ceiling previously smashed by Penny Arcade Adventures.

Patch This Game - Burnout Paradise

Xbox 360 owners? Welcome to last month on the PS3. The Burnout Paradise free "Cagney" update includes some bug fixes plus a slew of new features:

  • New online "freeburn" versions of Marked Man, Road Rage and Stunt Run
  • 70 new timed online challenges with leaderboards
  • Two vehicles and five liveries
Expect Xbox 360 updates to this title to continue to lag behind the PS3, with a Burnout Bikes expansion, weather effects, night racing and PS3 trophies expected to hit next in the fall - also for free...

R.I.P. - Fury

If you bought into the fast and furious massively multiplayer PvP battles of Fury, you have maybe a day left to play it. Australian developer Auran, which launched the game only about 10 months ago, quietly asked retailers to pull any remaining stock about 30 days ago when it was clear it would not be profitable. If you managed to somehow snag a copy in the past month, you may be eligible for a refund from the store where you bought it...

The PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV has been officially confirmed and given a Nov. 18 release date. Not much has been revealed except that it will offer "newly expanded multiplayer"...

Download This - New Madden NFL 09 Brett Favre Jets cover

Madden 09 retail coverMadden 09 revised cover
If you care that Brett Favre was picked up by the New York Jets but appears on the retail Madden NFL 09 box wearing his Green Bay Packers skins, you're probably a little OCD. The good news is that there is a cure: EA released downloadable PDFs you can print and shove into your game case (some stores are even offering to print it for you as an incentive to sway your annual Madden bucks their way). There's also an in-game roster update for Internet-connected Xbox 360, Xbox, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2 and Wii versions that makes Favre the starting Jets quarterback. Not online? EA suggests you go to Franchise Mode, move Favre to free agent status and then put him anywhere you damn well want...

Sucks To Be You - Resistance 2 beta is live (and you probably can't play even if you paid)

The Resistance 2 beta site now offers access to the pre-release multiplayer game for those who have been invited. Alas, it seems as though those people who plunked down $25 for a Qore digital magazine subscription have been left out in the cold until September. Also, if you haven't paid to play and don't want to, Insomniac promises there will be other ways to score an invite when the beta opens up further. That said, if you think maybe your invite got lost in the ether, try entering your PSN login credentials at the beta site and see what happens...

Xbox Live Marketplace - Fable II Pub Games, Bionic Commando: Rearmed and sexy Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 theme

This week's Xbox Live Marketplace haul includes Fable II Pub Games, which enable you to start amassing gold now for the full Fable II retail game when it launches in October or, more likely, start out the game in debt. The good news is that the games are all fun and the tutorials in the demo give you a nice tour of the three innovative variants on blackjack, roulette and slots. Now if you preordered Fable II hoping to score a free code for the Pub Games only to have it fail to work, try again now - there was a lag between when the codes were e-mailed and actually active to use on Xbox Live. (Me, I refuse to invest any more real dollars into Microsoft points until Xbox support sorts out the stuff I've already paid for or downloaded legitimately, but if I had 800 of them in my account I'd buy it!).

If you have more points than sense, here's what you'll find this week (a few freebies too):

  • Arcade: Fable II Pub Games ($10) and Bionic Commando: Rearmed ($10)
  • Rock Band Roadrunner Records Pack 1 ($6 or $1 each) "Runnin' Wild" by Airborne, "Clouds Over California" by DevilDriver, "Constant Motion" by Dream Theater, "My Curse" by Killswitch Engage, "Aesthetics of Hate" by Machine Head and "Sleepwalker" by Megadeth
  • Demo:Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09
  • Game Videos: Battlefield: Bad Company, Beijing 2008, Dead Space, Facebreaker, Madden NFL 09, Saints Row 2 and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
  • Themes: Beijing 2008, Bionic Commando: Rearmed, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 Gemma Atkinson, Facebreaker, Madden NFL 09 20th Anniversary, Fracture and Think Pink ($1.88 each) plus Ford Flex and Hamlet 2 (free)
  • PIctures: Beijing 2008 ($2.50), Bionic Commando: Rearmed ($1.25), Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 Gemma Atkinson ($1.25), Fable II Pub Games (free; enters you in sweepstakes), Golden Axe: Beast Rider ($2.50), Madden NFL 09 20th Anniversary ($1.25), Ford Flex (free) and Hamlet 2 (free)

On Vacation

I've run this blog with weekday updates (and the occasional weekend notices) for five years now without a break. Tomorrow, I'm taking one. I'll do my best to catch things up next weekend.

It's the dead of summer - there won't be all that much news to worry about. So take a break, have some fun and I'll see you back here soon enough.

News Flash - New PSP 3000 due in October

PSP 3000 Wait, don't buy that PlayStation Portable! If you've held out this long, you can last until the new PSP 3000 is released sometime in October. The updated gaming portable offers a better range of colors, more contrast and an anti-reflective coating designed to improve outdoor viewing. There's even a microphone to support built-in Skype phone capabilities, at least in some markets (this was not officially confirmed for U.S., at least not that I saw). The unit will mostly sell in bundles with games and UMD movies at first but will eventually see standalone release in a $170 core pack. Colors include Piano Black and Mystic Silver (pictured)...

Rumor Patrol - Xbox 360 price cuts

If you've been ogling that new Xbox 360 in the shop window, you may want to extend your flirting for another couple of weeks. Several leaked ads from prominent retailers Best Buy, Kmart and Radio Shack seem to confirm a series of Xbox 360 price cuts for the weekend of Sept. 7. If true, the memory card-only Xbox 360 Arcade will drop to $200 (-$80), the new 60GB Core model will be $300 (-$50) and the tricked out 120GB Elite will be cut to $400 (-$50). If only Microsoft would fix its broken DRM recovery, I might be one of those standing in line for an Elite...

PS3 Round-up - Sony seeks parity with Xbox 360

PS3 Wireless KeypadIt looks like Sony is concentrating its PlayStation 3 efforts on "me-too" features to catch up with Microsoft in some key areas. Recently there was the update that adds custom soundtracks, in-game dashboard access and Trophies which, if ever rolled out more fully, might sway some Xbox 360 gamerscore whores on cross-platform titles. Now there are officially prepaid PSN cards that can be used for online purchases, available at Pamida, Meijer and Speedway stores today and coming soon to Blockbuster, 7-Eleven and Rite Aid. (Alas, GameStop apparently won't be able to sell these until next year when their equipment will be upgraded to permit card activation.) Coming soon, Sony revealed it will release a wireless keypad in November that attaches to Sixaxis and DualShock controllers to permit easier text entry and chat in supported titles including Home and LittleBigPlanet. It snaps on top instead of the bottom, but otherwise looks very much the same as the highly regarded 360 keypad. Now if Sony could just ship Home and LittleBigPlanet, then maybe all of these little gambits will start to pay off...
