It's possible that the new PlayStation 3 v2.42 firmware update will grant you some great boon in the form of improved, perhaps less crash-prone gameplay in some title you're playing. But what games it helps, Sony is not saying. Just know that it's big - probably a good overnight download. Speculation is that its focus isn't game patching (as Sony says) but actually provides backend support for the Life With PlayStation features announced at E3 - basically Sony's answer to the Wii's news and weather channels. If true, we can expect it to launch very soon, maybe even in the next few days. For now, most of us will view the patch mainly as an impediment to accessing the PlayStation Store Thursday, so you might as well get it now - particularly if you'd planned to buy one of those $5 discount games before the sale ends and/or want to beat the rush when Life With PlayStation does launch...
