RIP - Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden

Tomonobu Itagaki
Tomonobu Itagaki
The creator of the Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden series, Tomonobu Itagaki, has quit and sued publisher Tecmo over unpaid completion bonuses for Dead or Alive 4. It's also been reported that Itagaki disowned the enhanced PS3 port, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, even refusing to sign copies of it at public appearances since a colleague reputedly pushed the game through management without his consent or involvement. If his most recent statements are accurate, the head of Tecmo even goaded the game designer (who has long cultivated a rock star persona) by actually suggesting Itagaki quit and sue the company.

There are a few possible outcomes and interpretations, though these are pure conjecture:
  • DOA and Ninja Gaiden are dead
  • Tecmo will try to ressurrect these franchises without Itagaki and risk the wrath of the fans
  • Itagaki will be coaxed back at significantly more pay and return to the popular franchises
  • This is all an elaborate publicity stunt timed to the release of Ninja Gaiden II (which would be Itagaki's "swan song" if the "dispute" is not resolved)
We'll see what happens...

GTA IV Round-up - Thompson disbarment, car guide and police complaints

While technically not Grand Theft Auto IV news, reports that anti-videogame blowhard Jack Thompson will most likely be disbarred later this year is welcome news to fans of the series. Thompson has tried to link videogames to virtually every press-worthy violent crime in the past decade, though anyone who has read even one of his briefs can tell that his grasp of the issues (as well as reality and the English language) is severely lacking. According to reports, Thompson actually walked out of the hearing and, in his absence, the Florida bar asked for enhanced disbarment which would mean he could not practice law in the state for at least 10 years. We'll know the final outcome Sept. 2. (I normally avoid giving Thompson publicity, but for this I'll make an exception.)

Other helpful and entertaining GTA IV fare includes a jalopnik.com's detailed automobile guide , which shows the vehicles and examines their real-world inspirations. And finally satire site The Onion hits another one out of the park with it's must-read report Liberty City Police Face Allegations Of Incompetence, Brutality...

PlayStation Store - Free God of War II song, demos and Qore digital magazine subscriptions

The big surprise from Sony this week was the introduction of a new subscription content service called Qore on the PlayStation Store. While online play is free on the PlayStation Network (unlike Xbox Live's $50/year pay-to-play service), this appears to be a first attempt to subsidize by a "monthly digital magazine." The first issue (also available for $3 a month) requires 1.5GB and delivers "exclusive content" (presumably videos) for Afro Samurai, Secret Agent Clank, SOCOM: Confrontation, Soul Calibur 4 and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, plus a theme and invitation to the SOCOM: Confrontation beta, art galleries, and Blu-ray ads.

Actually, apart from the beta invite and maybe the theme, everything here is promotional - so you're essentially paying for ads. This also means we'll start seeing some of the better content withheld from the free Store to favor paying subscribers.

Fortunately, that's not the case this week - here's what you'll find new in the PlayStation Store:
  • PS3 Games: Novastrike ($10) and Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 ($10)
  • PSP Game: SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 2 ($16)
  • Guitar Hero III track “The End Begins (to Rock)” from God of War II (free) and Motorhead Track Pack ($6.25) with “Motorhead,” "Stay Clean,” and “(We Are) The Road Crew”
  • Rock Band Disturbed Pack 1 ($3, or $1 each) with “Indestructible,” "Inside the Fire” and “Perfect Insanity” and Jimmy Buffett Pack 01 ($5.50, or $2 each) with “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” “Margaritaville” and "Volcano"
  • Demos: Battlefield: Bad Company multiplayer, Civilization Revolution and NASCAR 09
  • Game Videos: Dead Space, Fracture, Guitar Hero III God Of War II music video, Hail to the Chimp, Lego Indiana Jones, Resident Evil 5 and Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3
  • Theme: Retro
  • Music: God Of War II “The End Begins (to Rock)” audio track (free)

  • Guitar Hero III Motorhead Track Pack ($6.25) with “Motorhead,” "Stay Clean,” and “(We Are) The Road Crew”

Sucks to Be You - EA now enforcing 60-day Rock Band hardware warranty

If you've been holding off on sending in that unresponsive Rock Band drumset, snapped drum pedal or faulty Stratocaster for replacement by EA, it may be too late. There has always been a 60-day warranty on these instruments, but now EA is enforcing it by requiring you to submit a receipt before accepting your instrument for one of its replacement plans. So keep that receipt, and act fast if you have any problems at all.

On a personal note, I got a wireless Stratocaster back in March when they launched. It had a very poor tilt sensor that invariably cost me notes when I tried (usually unsuccesfully) to trigger it. Gamestop told me I was better off returning it to EA since they projected shortages of this model (in part since the sensor issue was fairly widespread) so I sent it in. It's been nearly six weeks now, and I still haven't received a replacement. Late last month, a phone support rep offered me a complimentary wired guitar as a make-good for the delay and a vague promise that I should see a new wireless axe sometime in June. Today, after yet another call to enquire about both guitars, I was told the wired one would come someday (it's apparently not tracked and up to the "warehouse" to ship out whenever they get to it) but the rep expedited my wireless replacement and issued me return tracking to receive it in the next 7-10 days. It was when the new RMA was opened to ship the replacement guitar that I saw this mail requesting a receipt to validate my purchase:

Thank you for contacting Electronic Arts regarding your Rock Band Wireless Guitar

In order to proceed with the shipment of your item, we will need to verify that you are within the 60-day Hardware Warranty period. Please visit our FAQ for details on how to submit your receipt. Once we verify your eligibility, you will receive another e-mail letting you know that your shipment is on its way!
The rep immediately validated me since they had received my old guitar almost a month ago (and less than a month after launch), but others may not fare so well...

Act Fast! - Wal-Mart offers $100 gift card with PS3 through Saturday

If you've been on the fence about getting a PlayStation 3 (especially now that backward compatibility is a thing of the past), Wal-Mart is sweetening the deal by offering a $100 gift card with any Blu-Ray player purchase through Saturday. They also have marked down select Blu-Ray movies to $15 including 300, The Fifth Element and Shooter...

Stupid Marketing Tricks - Underwear-clad model sells Wii Fit

Nintendo denies it, but a viral video of a woman playing Wii Fit in her underwear has been traced back to Tinsley Advertising, a company that promises "full-service" marketing. Apparently both people who appear in the popular YouTube clip are both Tinsley employees. Perhaps the title "Why every guy should buy their girlfriend Wii Fit" should have been a tip-off. The video is not particularly safe for work (unless you're in Europe or employed by a company where staff wear even less than skivvies), in case you hadn't guessed by the description...

Dated! - Unreal Tournament 3 for Xbox 360

Looks like the PS3 console exclusivity period for Unreal Tournament 3 has nearly ended. The Xbox 360 version is due out on or about July 8 with a new split screen mode, five exclusive maps, two new characters, plus all of the downloadable content packs released to date. The game even boasts a new in-depth Gears of War 2 video preview of multiplayer modes, maps, weapons and more...

PlayStation Store - Quake Wars demo, track packs come out and PSP game prices go up

The big news this week at the PlayStation Store isn't what's new, but which old titles just got marked up. That's right, instead of discounting old inventory Sony is raising the price on these PSP games:
  • Ape Escape: On the Loose is $16 (+$6)
  • Gangs of London is now $23 (+$11)
  • Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee is $16 (+$5)
  • Kingdom of Paradise is $17 (+$6)
  • LocoRoco is $23 (+$1)
  • SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo is $16 (+$5)
  • Twisted Metal: Head-On is $16 (+$1)
  • WipeOut Pure is $16 (+$5)
The message here is that prices won't always drop, so if you don't buy new titles right away they may actually go up (like Rock Band discount tracks). Well, most of the time: The Con just dropped to $10, half its original price. If you are into what's new on the PlayStation Store, here's what you can find when your're not stuck watching hour-plus cutscenes in Metal Gear Solid 4:
  • Army of Two Veteran Map Pack (free)
  • Rock Band song “Girls Who Play Guitars” by Maximo Park ($2) and MTV2 Pack 01 ($3, or $1 per track) with “Moving to Seattle” by The Material, “A Clean Shot” by The Myriad and “Bullets & Guns” by Them Terribles
  • Guitar Hero III Isle of Wight Festival Track Pack ($6.25) with “I Predict a Riot” by Kaiser Chiefs, “Shoot the Runner” by Kasabian and “Problems (Live at Brixton)” by The Sex Pistols
  • PS1 on PS3/PSP: Syphon Filter 3 ($6)
  • Demo: Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
  • Game Videos: Civilization Revolution, Fatal Inertia, FIFA Interactive World Cup 2008, Hail to the Chimp, Kung Fu Panda, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Resistance 2
  • Theme: Metal Gear Solid 4
  • Wallpaper: PixelJunk Monsters
  • Movie Trailers: Hancock

Xbox Live Marketplace - Frogger 2, Quake Wars and Dark Sector demos, plus free ninja movies if you can get 'em

This weekend, Xbox Live Marketplace promises some free ninja movies to tie-in with their Ninja Gaiden II weekend, but good luck getting them.
  • Arcade: Frogger 2 ($10) and Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 ($10)
  • Demos: Dark Sector and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
  • Game Videos: Fable 2, Guitar Hero III Isle of Wight Track Pack, Hail to the Chimp, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Kung Fu Panda, The Last Remnant, more Ninja Gaiden II Ask a Ninja promos (and supposedly some free feature length ninja movies), Pirates vs Ninjas and Dodgeball, Prince of Persia, Star Ocean 4, Ticket to Ride and Too Human
  • Themes: Superbike World Championship, Cocktail Cuties and SpongeBob SquarePants ($1.88 each), plus Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 ($1.25), Gamefly (free) and University of Wisconsin ($2.25)

Wii Update - Patch your Wii Menu (or maybe not)

There's a new Wii update (v3.3), but apparently it serves no real purpose except to block a homebrew software exploit that makes use of a hacked Legend of Zelda save game, and the Datel Freeloader used to play imported games. Sounds like there's no compelling reason to update, so you can simply skip it for now until Nintendo introduces some actual new functionality instead of just blocking the stuff they don't want you to have. Oh wait, now you can actually put your Mii's in the Mii Parade. Sold...

Patch Your PS3 - v2.36 now for stability, v2.4 later for in-game XMB and trophies

The PlayStation 3 has a new firmware update and another on the not-to-distant horizon. There are no specifics given, but the just released v2.36 patch provides improved "system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles." One presumes they mean Grand Theft Auto IV, which most PS3 gamers have just recently evicted from their Blu-Ray drives for Metal Gear Solid 4. More promising is the v2.40 update, which Sony confirmed will add in-game access to the Cross Media Bar (XMB), similar to the Xbox 360 in-game dashboard, and trophies - Sony's answer to Microsoft's achievements. There's no date for v2.4, but they wouldn't be trumpeting it so loud if it wasn't coming soon...

The Mod Squad - Spore Creature Creator

If you can't wait to get your Spore on, the Spore Creature Creator has launched in two flavors: free limited demo (with about one quarter of the available creature parts) and $10 full PC tool (oh, and there's a $10Mac version too). There are already more than 200,000 creatures in the Sporepedia, so there will be no shortage of mayhem when the game launches for PC and Mac this fall. There's also a Nintendo DS version called Spore Creatures coming, and if you make a creature that you fall in love with (awwww), Zazzle will sell you a shirt, hat, mug, poster or other doodad with your creation on it...

1600th Post - BioShock for PC no longer requires activation

Give 2K Games some credit - they lived up to their promises and removed all activation restrictions from the PC version of BioShock. This means that as of today, you can install the game as much as you want anywhere you want without patching. The game still uses SecuROM for activation but, according to 2K's community manager (favorite job title of my career!), it no longer enforces limits on the number of installs or computers you can use. In a move that squeaks of PR without being cloying, 2K Elizabeth adds:

"As I promised that the activation limits would go away, I can promise that if we ever stop supporting BioShock... we will release a patch so that the game is still playable. I believe, as you seem to, that BioShock will be the kind of game we will want to revisit 5, 10, 15 or more years from now. I want my copy to be playable, just as you do, and so does 2K."
Whatever. Great. Thanks. Now can we all just go back to mainlining Eve and upgrading our plasmid slots in that funky little hole in the ocean we call Rapture while we wait for the best game of 2007 to be plundered onto the silver screen by Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Carribbean)...

  • The drums, apart from having an extra cymbal pad over Rock Band, are silicone enhanced for added bounce and reduced strike noise, wireless, and (as previously reported) sensitized to react to how hard you hit
  • Guitar Hero III downloads will be supported, though it has not been revealed whether you'll get a free upgrade for vocal and drum parts or if you'll be stuck playing them with dual guitars

Act Fast! - Hell's Kitchen Uncensored

Gordon RamsayThere was a time when all games licensed from movies and TV shows were awful, but that was before casual game developers got their hands on them. With their lower overhead and more reasonable production schedules, there is a much greater likelihood you'll find interesting and polished gameplay (albeit derivative of an existing genre). Case in point: Gordon Ramsay's Hell's Kitchen. A slick mashup of Diner Dash table waiting and Cake Mania "cooking"-type time management games, this one takes things further by letting you unlock real recipes to print after receiving a "critique" from the celebrity chef. For a limited time, you can get a saltier uncensored version where Chef Ramsay cuts loose with some verbal assaults on your mise en place - which, you can bet, fall short of the raunchy kitchen talk Tony Bourdain celebrates in his books but adds a more interesting flavor if you're into that. Try the standard, unseasoned game first with a free 60-minute demo. Then, if you like it, nab the uncensored version before it evaporates when the show's season finale airs July 8...

Rant - The new Xbox 360 License Transfer Tool doesn't fully cure our DRM headaches

After more than two years and an increasing number of customers complaining as their Xbox 360 consoles have red ringed, Microsoft has finally solved its DRM license transfer issue - sort of.

The just launched Xbox 360 License Transfer Tool will let you consolidate any licenses you may have scattered across multiple consoles and transfer them to another. The catch is that you can only perform this Web-initiated transfer once a year. After you take the plunge, you're locked out from doing so again for 12 months. Also, as with the 120GB hard drive transfer cable, it's an all-or-nothing affair.

This is good for some situations, like if you buy a bunch of Rock Band tracks at a buddy's house and want to reclaim them to your home console later. The problem is that you're then locked out of buying a new console for a year! So what should you do: Put off getting that HD-capable 360 for 12 months, or - what the heck - go ahead and buy it now and then reclaim your licenses? A year is a long time, too long for most to wait. You're just going to have to upgrade now.

It's clear that the iTunes model of authorizing and deauthorizing systems at will was deemed too permissive; people might use it to play games at their friends' house and then reclaim them back home later. And if you never logged that friend's Xbox 360 back onto Xbox Live, ostensibly you might have multiple consoles with the same purchases all playable offline (albeit with the same gamertag). Still, it seems like it would only take one slip to catch abusers, and you're still punishing the purchasers.

Thankfully, if you have to send your console in for repairs and it is replaced, the license transfer is automatic now - though you may have to go back and redownload your purchases to ensure they all work offline again.

My case is a little more complicated. I personally have 803 game licenses and 90 video licenses spread across two consoles in our home, and my wife has some too (though I can't login to see hers right now). Both of our 360s are from the 2005 launch and have had many problems (red ring, freezes due to overheating, video card death), but - apart from that first month replacement in 2005 - they have been repaired instead of replaced. And neither has HDMI. The small annoyance is that some of the licenses were limited-time freebies such as Oblivion mods I downloaded to my wife's console while mine was being repaired. I could simply sweep up all licenses and consolidate them on our respective consoles, but then I'm locked out of upgrading for a year. But I don't want to run out and just buy a new console (and certainly not two!) for a little piece of mind.

The good news is that the expanded 360 warranty coupled with the extended service plans we bought should give us options should our consoles fail. I'm not sure whether I'll upgrade to HDMI this year; it would be nice, but now I feel like if I do so, the people who came up with this inane solution win! So maybe I'll just take the plunge and consolidate all of our licenses.

But not right away. I've had enough 360 DRM headaches these past few years. If this thing has bugs and issues, I'm not going to be the one to find out the hard way - because if it can go wrong, it will go wrong for me. I'm going to wait at least a month to see how things shake out.

Xbox Live Marketplace - Free Frontlines map, Lego Indiana Jones demo and Dark Knight theme and pics

New Xbox 360 downloadable content was overshadowed this week by the tool you can use to reclaim your past purchases if they were bought on more than one console (particularly any that died and were replaced). If you're still confused about what this tool is and how it works, Microsoft has an FAQ and instructional video:

If, after reviewing all of this and reading yesterday's rant, you're still game to plunk down some hard-earned Microsoft points, here's what you can find on Xbox Live Marketplace (for what it's worth, I bought six more Rock Band songs myself - albeit before the tool was released):
  • Frontlines: Fuel of War Boneyard Map (free) which includes the automatic shotgun, rocket jeep and Red Star transport helicopter
  • Arcade: Happy Tree Friends False Alarm ($10) and Ticket to Ride ($10)
  • Guitar Hero III track (free) “I am Murloc” by Level 70 Elite Tauren Chieftain from World of Warcraft
  • Rock Band Weezer 01 track pack ($5.50, or $2 each) with "Dreamin'," "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived" and "Troublemaker, and the Pixies album Doolittle ($19, or $2 each) with "Crackity Jones," "Dead," "Debaser," "Gouge Away," "Here Comes Your Man," "Hey," "I Bleed," "La La Love You," "Monkey Gone to Heaven," "Mr. Grieves," "No. 13 Baby," "Silver," "Tame," and "There Goes my Gun"

First Look - Rock Band 2

After Rock Band hit last December, it was originally believed that - thanks to the weekly onslaught of downloadable songs - a sequel would be at least a couple years off. Not true. In what is clearly an effort to pre-empt Guitar Hero World Tour due in October, Rock Band 2 is being delivered in September. Not many details are being revealed yet (including track lists), but so far we know:
  • Original Rock Band instruments will work with Rock Band 2, though new instruments will be "quieter, more realistic, and more reliable"
  • Downloadable content will be interchangeable between the two games (a first, particularly for the Xbox 360 where downloads have traditionally been locked to each title)
  • Band World Tour will most likely be playable online out of the box, though this has only been hinted and not confirmed
  • There will be new options to pick and play your music, including ways to balance the risk/reward of random tracks in Band World Tour so you don't get blindsided by too difficult songs at inopportune times
  • A party mode should permit more fluid play with less time spent on set up
  • A new guitar vocalist mode should streamline the game for players who want to strum and sing at the same time
  • Many unspecified new features and improvements are in response to feedback and concerns posted on public Rock Band forums
  • Rumors indicate AC/DC, Bad Religion and Turbonegro will have songs in the game though no songs have been officially confirmed
  • Don't expect a music creation mode; Harmonix indicates they want to provide this, but said "we want to do it right" suggesting it won't be ready this year

Wii Stuff - Magnetica Twist, Fatal Fury 2 and PictoImage demo

This week's Wii update offers up:
  • WiiWare: Magnetica Twist ($10), an update to the reputed first-ever marble shooter game
  • Virtual Console: Fatal Fury 2 ($9), the Neo-Geo classic fighter
  • DS Demos: Carnival Games and PictoImage, plus several repeats
  • Game Videos: Alone in the Dark, Cabela's Trophy Bucks, Geometry Wars Galaxies, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, Guitar Hero: On Tour, Magnetica Twist, My Weight Loss Coach, Order Up!, Paws and Claws: Pet Vet, Wall-E and Wii Fit
