It took a few days, but Microsoft has announced it discontinued manufacture of the Xbox 360 HD-DVD add-on drive and marked down remaining units to $50. Good thing they didn't build the drive into their console - but then if they had, perhaps it wouldn't have failed. If you bought one, don't worry: Microsoft will honor its standard warranty. Just don't expect any more firmware updates...
