Wii Virtual Console - Japanese rarities

Finally, Nintendo is putting the Wii Virtual Console to great use by releasing previously Japan-only and hard-to-find classic titles in North America:
  • Sin & Punishment (N64) - $12
  • Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (NES) - $6

Download This - PSP Theme Creator

PSP iconsSony released an official PSP Theme Creator tool for the PC. With it, you can replace wallpaper and even icons on your PlayStation Portable. Best of all, it's free. Download it from the Sony Japan site (the app itself runs in English) and use this tutorial to help you get started...

Misery Loves Company - Wrap that Wii-mote

Wii Remote JacketIt appears that the Nintendo lawyers weren't satisfied that stronger wrist straps were sufficient to protect consumers from flying Wii-motes. As of today, they are now offering free silicone sleeves to improve your grip and provide an extra layer of cushioning should the Wii-mote slip and strike someone or something. It's also worth noting that the Wii Remote Jacket will not prevent pregnancy and should not be used with silicone-based lubes. Get yours for free by visiting Nintendo.com or calling 1-866-431-8367. Have your Wii serial number handy to request up to 4 cushiony covers. New Wii-motes will begin shipping with the sleeves in coming weeks...

UPDATE: It's been reported that Nintendo is spending $17 million on this little retrofit. Ouch!

The Buzz - Halo 3 easter eggs

Master Chief in Ryu gearIf you recall that Master Chief's likeness made an appearance in Dead or Alive 4, then it's only mildly surprising that Team Ninja provided a few bonus touches for Halo 3. If you get every achievement (which means beating campaign on Legendary and rocking some ranked multiplayer matches), you'll unlock Ryu Hayabusa's ninja blade. You cannot wield it; it just stays strapped to your back as a badge of honor. (Perhaps you could loan it to Hiro so he'll get his powers back.) A slightly easier task is to find every hidden skull in the game. Collect all 13, and you'll earn Ryu's ceremonial helmet...

Rumor Patrol - New low-end Xbox 360, PS3s on the way? And more Wii scarcity

If you've been holding off on buying a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, you might want to wait a little longer. Rumors based on apparent leaks indicate that both consoles are getting new low-end configurations for the holidays to accommodate price-conscious consumers. If true, this means you'll see a PS3 with 40GB hard drive, 2 USB ports (not 4), no flash card slot, no backward compatibility and possibly a pack-in Blu-Ray movie for $400-500. Likewise, the Xbox 360 Arcade bundle will replace the now deprecated Core SKU but generously includes a wireless controller, 256MB memory card and 5 Xbox Live Arcade games (Boom Boom Rocket, Feeding Frenzy, Luxor 2, Pac-Man and Uno) for the old Core price of $280. (Other high-end Pro and Elite bundles will apparently pack-in Forza Motorsport 2 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance at their respective price points.) However, if you do spot a Wii in the wild, you should bag that puppy immediately. Nintendo is expecting more shortages as we get closer to the holidays...

Whoa! - So long, and thanks for all the Halo...

A week after grossing $300 million in first week receipts for Halo 3, Microsoft announced it is cutting the cord and releasing Bungie to be an independent company. The spin is that Bungie is returning to its "independent roots" and will be free to develop for other platforms, though Microsoft will get first look at any new titles and will continue to publish future Halo games. So, does this mean we might have a shot at seeing the long-rumored Halo DS game released? Will Bungie release Pimps at Sea for the PS3? Will there be a Master Chief-themed Boogie spin-off for the Wii? Time will tell...

Xbox Live Marketplace - Tetris Splash, kids game demos

This week, Xbox Live Marketplace is heavy on the Arcade add-ons and kids game demos:
  • Tetris Splash ($10) and various bundles and themes totalling $15 (so it's a stealth $25 title if you want all of the launch-day content)
  • Carcassonne King & Baron Expansion Pack ($3.75) adds seven new tiles including a king and a robber
  • Soltrio Solitaire Game Pack 9 ($1.88) with 10 new games including Pyramid, Fourteen Out and Block Ten (fyi- if you've bought them all, you've paid about $27 to date but with more than 100 game types to show for it!)
  • Demos: Bee Movie Game, Bladestorm (1.9GB!), Looney Tunes: ACME Arsenal and Thrillville: Off the Rails
  • Game Videos: 3D Ultra Minigolf Adventures Lost Island Expansion, Fatal Inertia, Looney Tunes: ACME Arsenal, Madden NFL 08 and Spider-Man: Friend or Foe
  • Themes: Crash Of The Titans, Fatal Inertia and Family Guy ($1.88 each)
  • Pictures: Crash Of The Titans, Two Worlds, Family Guy and Zoo Crew ($1 each)
If this week is any indication, Microsoft and its partners seem to be standardizing on $1 for picture packs...

PlayStation Network - The Simpsons Game demo, some other stuff

This week, Sony released a demo for The Simpsons Game (take that, Microsoft!) and some other goodies:
  • Go! Sports Ski ($3; no demo or trailer)
  • Demos: Bladestorm and (did we mention?) The Simpsons Game
  • Game Videos: Eye Of Judgement, Haze, Metal Gear Online, NBA 08 and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
  • Movie Trailers: Surf's Up and Tekkonkinkreet
Also, a low-priced entry-level PS3 has been confirmed for Europe but not the U.S. yet. Stay tuned...

Video Round-up - Halo 3

You can bet there will be no shortage of great Internet clips for Halo 3 in the coming weeks, months and years, thanks to Forge and the game's Saved Films feature. So far, there are a few standouts and some other videos that Halo fans shouldn't miss:

Luckiest. Shot. Ever.

Master Chief is Mario?!

It burns because it's true (and possibly infectious)

Wii Virtual Console - Neo Geo classics including Fatal Fury

  • Art of Fighting ($9)
  • Fatal Fury ($9)
  • World Heroes ($9)

Yet Another Game Delay - Unreal Tourmament 3 for PS3

Epic isn't making any promises, but it's going to try to deliver Unreal Tournament 3 for PS3 by holiday. But there is a good chance that it will slip later than promised, as have other PS3 games that use the Unreal engine (including Stranglehold and BlackSite: Area 51). More bad news: The speculation that PC and PS3 players could go head to head has been squashed. However, for what it's worth, the PS3 edition will have all of the maps from the PC game. Speaking of the PC version, expect a demo in two weeks...

Patch This Game - Halo 3

Halo 3 has already been patched to improve multiplayer matchmaking and address some player complaints:
  • Big Team Battles are now for 16 players
  • Slayer games are much more frequent in Lone Wolves
  • Shotty Snipers won't show up as often in the Team Slayer playlist and, if veto'd, you won't get it again right away
  • The attacking team sees a waypoint for the VIP in one-sided VIP matches

Wii Update - Keyboard support, Internet and Everybody Votes channels

That flashing light on your Wii this morning means it's time for another Wii Menu update. This one adds USB keyboard support to make Internet browsing and other text-heavy tasks easier. There are also free updates in the Wii Shop for the Internet Channel, which now permits you to paste text into the search box and send links to friends, and the Everybody Votes Channel, which provides a little more detail for demographic results...

Blog - Xbox 360 video card death (no red ring)

Another dead Xbox 360 (but mine is much less dramatic than this picture)You may recall that one of my launch Xbox 360s suffered one of the first recorded red rings of death. Well, the replacement unit I received back in 2005 has just died, but it's a new form of failure that I haven't seen reported.

The video just stopped working. Yesterday, when I downloaded Puzzle Quest at 1 a.m., I noticed that the video suddenly went greenish. I removed and replaced the video cable from the back of the console, and that seemed to fix it. Last night it started to go a little green again, and this morning when I booted it there was no video at all.

My first thought was that the video cable was damaged. I did notice a little stress on it, since I have my console sitting horizontally on a high shelf (for maximum ventilation) and gravity does pull on it. But I tried swapping the cable for another and even tried standard definition output. Nothing worked, except to swap in a second Xbox 360 - which worked fine with either cable in either setup. So clearly it's the console.

I called 1-800-4MY-XBOX, and the tech confirmed that the video card has probably failed. So 12 minutes later, they're sending me a box to ship it in for repairs (estimated turnaround: 10-12 days after they receive it). But here's the interesting thing: When I asked if they had a solution for transferring content ownership from my old Xbox 360 to a new one (assuming they provide a replacement instead of a repair), the support person said they do.

If you're not familiar with this downloadable content issue, any purchases you make are locked to both your gamertag AND console's unique ID. So if you buy an Xbox Live Arcade game, map pack, TV show, theme or picture pack, and you want to use it on a different console, you need to be logged into Xbox Live or it won't be authorized. If your Internet goes down, or you're at a LAN party or relative's house with with no 'Net hookup, you're out of luck. And if your 360 dies and is decommissioned, up until now you've just been out of luck. They did issue me a credit for my few purchases in 2005, but I had to use my wife's gamertag to buy them again on the new console - and this isn't a very good system when you have 50 or so items, as I do now.

I pried, and he said the Xbox Live service team can activate my purchased games and downloads for the new console. I suspect that this is a half-truth or misunderstanding. If this problem has been solved, why haven't we heard about it yet? Has anyone else been through this process and had ownership of their Xbox Live purchases transferred to a new console? I sure hope this is true. But, unless someone can confirm it, I'll believe it when I see it.

-=Gamewatcher

p.s. - Here's an example of why Microsoft DRM for the Xbox 360 really stinks. I just realized my primary Xbox 360 will be out for repair when the free Oblivion downloadable add-on Fighter's Stronghold hits next week. It's only free for one week. I can download it to my wife's 360, but if I ever want to play the game offline I'll either need to use her console (which might not have all of the other mods installed to it) or purchase it again with her login on my new console.

This is, of course, assuming Microsoft salvages my other purchased content and downloads (which includes another Oblvion mod that was free for a limited time, and a couple more that came from an OXM disc). The risk is that I might load a saved game that depends on one or more of these mods and it might break it. And this is why I won't actually buy mods for Oblivion, and probably shouldn't take the free ones unless they're permanently free.

Now, in an ideal world, I would simply download the mod next week to her 360 and, when I get my old 360 or its replacement back, remove the license for the Fighter's Stronghold add-on and transfer it to mine. Many DRM systems (such as iTunes) support deauthorization - why can't the Xbox 360?

PlayStation Network - Everyday Shooter, Ratchet and Clank Future demo

This week, the PlayStation Store has:
  • Everyday Shooter ($10; no demo)
  • Demos: Conan, NHL 2K8 and Ratchet and Clank Future
  • Game Videos: Fallout 3, Folklore and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
  • Wallpaper: Everyday Shooter and Ratchet and Clank Future
  • Movie Trailers: The Assassination of Jesse James, Spiderwick Chronicles and Walk Hard

Xbox Live Marketplace - Puzzle Quest, free Toyota adver-game

This week, Xbox Live Marketplace has enough worthwhile downloads to fill your 6-item queue...
  • Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords ($15 for the best version yet)
  • Yaris, a Toyota-themed racing shooter advergame (free, but they might sell you a $12,000 car!)
  • Band of Bugs Ninja Sticks of Fury Pack ($3.13) with a new Snow tile set, 10-level campaign and Ninja unit
  • Demos: Conan, F.E.A.R. Files: Extraction Point, Project Gotham Racing 4, The Simpsons Game and Virtua Fighter 5
  • Game Videos: Crash Of The Titans, Fable 2 and NBA 2K8
  • Themes: Army of Two and Crash Of The Titans (all are $1.88 each)
  • Pictures: 3D Ultra Minigolf ($1), Army of Two ($1), Band of Bugs ($0.63), Bomberman Live ($1.25), Crash Of The Titans ($1 each), NHL 2K8 (each team is $1), Puzzle Quest ($1.25 each), skate ($1.50), Yaris (free), Ford Sync (free), Girly Bugs ($1) and Luchadores ($1)
On Monday, don't forget to download The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion Fighter's Stronghold expansion, which is only free for one week. It adds a new castle that you inherit, complete with knight minions, treasure vault, vintner, combat trainer, taxidermist and armorer's forge. No word on how much it will cost after that, but since my primary 360 has a dead video card and will be shipped off for repair next week, I'll probably have to find out (assuming Microsoft has truly fixed the console license transfer issue; I'm still not buying content that might nuke my save if played offline)...

Whoa! - EA buys BioWare, Pandemic

EA has purchased Bioware (Mass Effect, Knights of the Old Republic) and Pandemic (Mercenaries, Star Wars Battlefront). Not sure how this could possibly be good news for gamers. I can't recall the last EA game I bought - they tend to be unpolished at best and buggy at worst...

Demo Alert - Unreal Tournament 3

The PC demo for Unreal Tournament 3 is available for download now. There are two deathmatch maps and one for vehicle-based capture the flag with online play and bots. And it's a week early...

Blog - Is Microsoft up to its (2-year) old tricks?

Fiasco is the only word for this. It's 2007, and we're still seeing reports like this about dead Xbox 360s. Considering how recent these events are, it's pretty clear that the only method Microsoft has to update the licensing for your old purchases from a dead console to its replacement is STILL what they did for me in December 2005: issue you Microsoft points that you can use with a new profile (since your old one isn't allowed to purchase the same item twice) so you can redownload all of the items to a new console. And if that 360 dies (which it will someday, though hopefully not as quickly or often as it has for Speaker Ender), you're back at square one.

I just can't believe the Xbox 360 DRM system is so restrictive that, even after two years, it cannot be updated by a support tech to transfer primary ownership of your purchases from a decommissioned unit to a new console ID. Yes, there need to be safeguards and protocols and validation layers and audits to ensure that purchase transfers are not abused.

I can see that my next few weeks are going to be fun, fun, fun - and missing out on the free Oblivion add-on tomorrow will be the least of my worries. My only hope is that they repair my console instead of replace it, though I sure would like an HDMI output and cooler chipset. But I want access to my hundreds of dollars of purchases more.

If Microsoft had fixed this problem, I would have bought a 360 Elite when it came out, all of the Oblivion add-ons (except the cosmetic Horse Armor) and several more Arcade games than I have to date. And I bet I'm not the only one. Fixing this can only lead to more long-term revenue from 360 owners and fewer support headaches on both sides.

Wii Virtual Console - Ninja Gaiden II and more

The Nintendo Wii may not have quite the horsepower for the modern Ninja Gaiden series, but one of its platformer predecessors is now available on the Wii Virtual Console:
  • Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos (NES) - $5
  • Gate of Thunder (TurboGrafx) - $8
  • Metal Marines (SNES) - $8

Cool Tools - BioShock Activation Revoke Tool

2K Games released a tool that lets you reclaim your BioShock license so you can uninstall the game from one PC and move it to another. It's not needed if you bought the game on Steam, since the Steam client takes care of this for you automatically. The Activation Revoke Tool page includes a full FAQ that covers virtually any licensing issue you might encounter. If only everyone was so responsive to our DRM concerns. Microsoft, are you taking notes...

Cool Tools - Play World of Warcraft with a 360 controller

SwitchBlade for WoWNo, you won't be seeing World of Warcraft on the Xbox 360 (now or probably ever). But if the Xbox 360 controller is your weapon of choice, now you can enjoy simplified roaming through the massively multiplayer realm of Azeroth on your PC, though probably not a lot of complex activities without some significant remapping. Simply download the free SwitchBlade from xFire. I think my last barrier for joining World of Warcraft may have finally been lifted - well, except for the fear that my virtual life will replace my real one...

Confirmed - $400 PlayStation 3 for the holidays

Sony finally confirmed that the U.S. will get a $400 PlayStation 3 model launching on Nov. 2. The unit will have a 40GB hard drive (twice the size of the standard Xbox 360 configuration), Spider-Man 3 on Blu-Ray, a couple fewer USB ports, no memory card reader and absolutely no PS2 backward compatibility - not even the crappier software emulation offered with the newer 80GB systems. Speaking of which, the 80GB PS3s will drop down to $500 (but will they still include a free game?)...

UPDATE: Now, this is just sad. If a little newspaper known as The Wall Street Journal has it right, Sony didn't remove backward compatibility to save money. They did it to "encourage buyers of the entry-level PlayStation 3 to purchase more games designed specifically for the new system." Obviously, the Sony execs haven't done their homework here. Most people don't actually use the backward compatibility features of their consoles much, but they sure like having it. So it enhances "perceived value" without greatly affecting the attach rate for new games. The bigger problem is that Sony doesn't have many awesome, system-selling titles yet. Look at what Halo 3 just did for the Xbox 360 (and that took nearly two years!). Patience, grasshopper. The important thing right now is to build your installed base any way you can.

  • Pictures: Beautiful Katamari ($1 each), Fatal Fury Special ($0.75), Tomb Raider: Anniversary ($1.88 each), Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground ($1.75 and $2), Virtua Fighter 5 ($1.25 each), DP Anime: Halloween ($1.25), DP Pets: Beagle ($1), Dual Sword 2 - Anime ($1.13), Halloween Vampire ($1.13), South Park ($1.25), The Sarah Silverman Program ($1) and LG Action Sports (free)
And don't forget to pick up The Fighter's Stronghold for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, free until Monday...

Blog - Blu-Ray and the 80029940 error

Just when I thought perhaps Blu-Ray might be at least more reliable than HD-DVD, I encounter the dreaded 80029940 error.

We had rented Black Snake Moan from NetFlix. At first, the disc wouldn't play at all. Everytime I tried to launch it, the PS3 would hum for about 30 seconds and then crash back to the dashboard with the error message: "This video cannot be played. (80029940)"

Around the third try, it actually launched. And played fine for about 20-30 minutes. Then it started freezing. Resetting the PS3 didn't help. Cleaning the disc didn't either - and there was absolutely no visible sign of damage. The disc looked pristine.

I checked online, and several people reported that this problem is common with Blu-Ray disc rentals from mail order services like NetFlix and Blockbuster. Apparently, the discs are susceptible to hairline cracks after being processed by the post office sorting machines.

I hope that is all it is, and that the replacement disc will play fine. After this and the Happy Feet incident on HD-DVD (it freezes at the 28 minute mark on some players, but not others), I'm not particularly thrilled with this generation of movie formats. I remember when I upgraded from laserdisc to DVD, it was relatively painless. There weren't any firmware updates and, with rare exception, every movie just played.

This time around, I feel played.

-=Gamewatcher

UPDATE: I sent the Blu-Ray disc back to NetFlix as damaged, and the replacement played much better. There was a slight hiccup about three quarters of the way into the movie, but otherwise played great. I chalk it up to the suspicion that Blu-Ray discs are much more susceptible to damage than regular DVDs (and possibly HD-DVDs). If you do encounter the 80029940 error, replace it at the store you bought it or return it to the rental service for a new copy.

Overall, I'm still leaning heavily toward Blu-Ray since so far my experience has been that they're more reliable if well cared for, while some pristine HD-DVDs just won't play reliably on some players until Toshiba gets around to fixing the firmware (if ever).

Xbox 360 Round-up - New HD-DVD offers, rumors

Xbox 360 with HD-DVD external drive; will they merge? This week, Best Buy is offering the Heroes Season 1 set on HD-DVD free if you buy the $180 HD-DVD player add-on for the Xbox 360. There's also an updated mail-in offer for 5 free HD-DVD discs, good if you purchase a Toshiba or Microsoft player before the end of February 2008. You still have to choose from a prescribed list, but free is free. Finally, there's a rumor that Toshiba is working on a special version of the Xbox 360 with the HD-DVD player fully integrated. Microsoft has resisted this approach in the past, mainly because it sets the expectation that games could take advantage of the enhanced storage capabilities - which might improve some games but would further fragment the console's already fractured installed base (hard drive/no hard drive, HDMI/no HDMI, likely to fail/less likely to fail)...

UPDATE: The Best Buy deal just got even better. The chain is apparently honoring a separate ad that grants you two free HD-DVD titles (your choice, as long as they're $34.99 or less) with the 360 HD-DVD drive. If you already purchased it this week, you can take your receipt in and request the additional two movies.

Stupid Marketing Tricks - Xbox pumpkin stencils

Xbox 360 pumpkins: Geek tested, lawyer approved
Xbox 360 pumpkins: Geek tested, lawyer approved
The latest viral marketing attempt isn't a YouTube video, it's a collection of corporate lawyer-approved Xbox 360 pumpkin stencils in PDF format. Just print 'em, get carving and and let the shameless promotion begin. There's also a contest where you might win a bunch of free games and swag, and of course links to some 360 games that Microsoft wants you to buy (Cars: Mater-National, now that's a Halloween-themed title). You didn't see that coming, did you...

UPDATE: I guess the Microsoft lawyers didn't imagine that someone might take the officially sanctioned Ring of Light logo and turn it into the Red Ring of Death. That's what happens when you don't wrap an End User License Agreement around everything:

Red Ring of Death pumpkin

As someone who currently has a second Xbox 360 out for repair, this is pretty funny...

Whoops! - Ratchet and Clank Future install glitch

Apparently, the testers at Insomniac Games got a little too much sleep and missed an installation bug in Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. When you pop in the game, odd amounts of remaining hard drive capacity can cause the game to fail, citing insufficient free space. Until the inevitable patch, the workaround is to either delete or add/download new files to alter the free space amount by plus or minus 500MB. A little trial and error, and maybe you get to play that $60 game you paid for. Hey, it's not a bug, it's a meta-game...

Well, That Blows - Dueling guitars for Rock Band and Guitar Hero III

If you were hoping to save a few bucks and use your Guitar Hero III axe with Rock Band, think again. If the rumors prove true, neither new guitar will work with the other's game (yes, Harmonix and Red Octane are apparently going through the post-breakup blues). But, if you own the Guitar Hero II Explorer for Xbox 360, it's apparently been tested and (at least at this pre-release stage) works with both games. If you believe Harmonix (who moved on to make Rock Band), it's because the Guitar Hero III developers at Activision's Neversoft studio broke the existing guitar formula - though they apparently retain some backward compatibility with older controllers. But Harmonix isn't blameless; they'll only sell Rock Band in a $170 configuration that includes guitar, drums and microphone for at least the first few months of release.

Confused? Let's break it down:
  • Guitar Hero and Guitar Hero II controllers (and any third-party guitars) will probably work with Guitar Hero III and Rock Band (the Xbox 360 one, at least, has been tested and worked with prerelease versions of the games)
  • The guitar included with Guitar Hero III probably won't work with Rock Band or earlier Guitar Hero games
  • The guitar bundled with Rock Band probably won't work with Guitar Hero III, though it probably will jam with its predecessors
Time will tell if these rumors are true. You might want to hold on to any guitars you have, just in case they help bypass some of this political nonsense. C'mon, guys, it's music. It's about playing together. Can't we all just strum along...

PlayStation Store - EyeCreate, Ninja Gaiden add-on and new firmware rumor

There a few new items in the PlayStation Store this week:
  • Free EyeCreate video editing software for the new PlayStation Eye camera
  • Piyotama Halloween-themed skin (free if you have the game)
  • Ninja Gaiden Sigma Rachel Master pack ($3) with 5 new survival battles
  • Spyro the Dragon ($6) for PS3 and PSP
  • Game Videos: Bionic Commando and Time Crisis 4
  • Wallpaper: Eye of Judgment
  • Trailers: The Water Horse, P.S. I Love You, Reign Over Me and AC/DC Live at Donington
If the haul seems a little light this week, it might be due to Sony reportedly prepping its PS3 v2 firmware for next week. If the rumors are true, you can expect:
  • Power on and off your PS3 with PSP Remote Play
  • Custom themes - apparently, these are more evolved than wallpaper and Sony may charge for some of them, but you can also roll your own
  • Playlists for music and photos
  • Parental lock for your Web browser, which will be free at least initially

Xbox Live Marketplace - Forza 2 track, Guitar Hero III demo

This week's Xbox Live Marketplace highlight is the track pack for Forza Motorsport 2, which Microsoft cut from $7.50 to $5 after Internet uproar backed them down on the price. (Too bad it's had no effect at all on Guitar Hero II downloadable music packs.) It also looks like Rooster Teeth is trying something new; the latest Red vs. Blue video will cost you a cool dollar.

Here's what you'll find on Marketplace this week:
  • Forza Motorsport 2: Motegi Track Pack ($5) with four different routes around Japan’s famous Twin Ring Motegi
  • Ace Combat 6 airplanes including the free F-16C Scarface, plus the F-14D Halloween, F-15E Active Stripes and F-16C Ace 2 ($2.50 each)
  • Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 Doral "Blue Monster" Course ($5)
  • Spider-Man 3 New Goblin ($3) playable character
  • Blue Dragon Package of 6 Handy Items ($2.50) includes the Nothing Glasses, Spring Breeze Kerchief, Devee Phonograph, Whimsical Heart, Master Thief Manual and Shuffle Helmet
  • Arcade: Battlestar Galactica and EXIT ($10 each)
  • Demos: Guitar Hero III and Need for Speed ProStreet
  • Halo: Landfall - Neill Blomkamp's first attempt to translate the world of the videogame to live action (free)
  • Red vs. Blue Recovery One - Part One ($1)
  • World Cybergames videos (free)

Wii Virtual Console - Castlevania II, other spooky fare

This week's Wii Virtual Console lineup is Halloween themed:
  • Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (NES) - $5
  • Magician Lord (Neo-Geo) - $9
  • Samurai-Ghost (TurboGrafx) - $6

Try This Game - Crysis

The demo for the heavily anticipated Crysis is now available for download (1.7GB). And, if you're still running Windows XP, you'll be pleased to know that some clever hackers have gotten around the DirectX 10-only lock on the "Very High" graphics setting, which apparently looks just as good despite the PR hype suggesting that Vista would be required. Tricks and Treats - New Halo 3 game type, Pinball FX table

Another free holiday bonus: Pinball FX owners can download a new Buccaneer-themed table (guess it wasn't finished in time for Talk Like a Pirate Day). The trick comes if you're unlucky enough to get the Red Ring of Death and have to forgo the festivities, instead ordering up a complimentary cardboard coffin for your 360...

And if that thought's not scary enough, you can play and vote on the finalists for the Doritos Unlock Xbox challenge. One of those games will eventually be released on Xbox Live Arcade. Spooky...

Nintendo revealed that the game will include a level editor and the ability to create, save and share stages with friends and even Nintendo. The best efforts will be offered back to all players as free daily downloads, though the catch is you'll only get to play these levels on the day they're released - and then they'll evaporate.. Wow, it's almost as if Nintendo is finally developing an online strategy. Too bad they also didn't postpone Metroid Prime 3 long enough to build an online multiplayer mode for it...
