Wii Virtual Console - Super Mario Bros. 2, more

This week, the Wii Virtual Console adds some worthwhile new downloads:
  • Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES) - $5
  • Ecco: The Tides of Time (Genesis) - $8
  • Dragon Spirit (TurboGrafx) - $6
In related news, Nintendo announced that it plans to match Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade and Sony's PlayStation Network Store with some new, original downloadable games of its own. But probably not before 2008...

Misery Loves Company - Auto Assault shuts down

If you have an Auto Assault account, you have through August 31 to fulfill your jones for car combat MMO mayhem. In the meantime, billed accounts will not be billed again. If you have multi-month billing or time cards, you may need to contact NCsoft to work out a reimbursement. And if you've never played, well, there's still a 14-day free trial listed - perhaps you can enjoy it for free or just a single month's fee until they shut down...

Xbox Live Marketplace - First look at Puzzle Quest, Missile Command and even some decent free stuff

The big news for Xbox Live Marketplace is that Puzzle Quest is nearly done and due for download in the near future. The definitive version to date, this game will feature online multiplayer with matchmaking, a local two-player battle mode, replays of monster capture matchs, a limit on powerful spell use (along with other rebalancing), the option to turn off hints and - best of all - the ability to patch any major bugs that slip past the test team (as they did with the DS and PSP versions). And - news flash - we just learned that a Wii version is coming this fall, budget priced at $30. We can only hope the long-overdue PC version will follow suit, and -- as with Shadowrun - will allow Windows players to challenge their 360 counterparts.

If you prefer your Xbox 360 downloadable content in the here and now, here's what's new and available:
  • The Rainbow Six Vegas Black Pack has been re-released, and now it's free (and if you paid before it was pulled, you will be reimbursed)
  • Missile Command ($5)
  • The F.E.A.R. Nightmare Pack ($6.25), which adds four new maps for the newly added multiplayer modes
  • MLB 2K7 Olympic Stadium (free)
  • Worms landscapes ($1.88 each), theme ($1.88), pictures ($1.25) and music pack (free)
  • Tenchu Z theme ($1.88) and picture pack ($0.75)
  • Videos for Fallout 3, Eternal Sonata, NCAA Football 08 (including in-depth previews) and the Shadowrun 1-800-MAGIC Episode 4 by the Red vs. Blue guys (free)
  • Fallout theme ($1.88) and picture pack ($1.25)
  • Overlord theme ($1.88) and picture packs ($1.25 each)
  • Gun Sword picture pack ($1)

Blog - Me and My PS3 (with price drop rumor!)

PS3Today was my birthday (for the record, I'm 39). And since my consulting/copywriting business is booming, I finally got myself a PlayStation 3.

It may surprise long-time readers of this blog that it took me so long to get one, since I've ranted all about the Xbox 360 and Wii's problematic interfaces. You might have just assumed I was a Sony fanboy. Well, nothing could be further from the truth. I actually have had a little distaste for Sony consoles over the years. Yes, I have a PS2 and I've wholly enjoyed several titles on it. In fact, I've developed a grudging respect for it. But it's never been my console of choice.

The fact is, I passed up the PS3 several times around the holidays last year because it was just too expensive and didn't promise much in the way of gaming experiences. I only picked it up now because I was curious to compare Blu-Ray movies to HD-DVD and to try a few high-def games to see how they stacked up against the Xbox 360.

Once I made up my mind that I would get one, it took me much longer than I had imagined to find any compelling games and Blu-Ray exclusive movies to go with it. I finally settled on Resistance: Fall of Man since I enjoy sci-fi shooters, and The Fifth Element and The Black Crowes: Freak N Roll (the latter I had to special order online since it's apparently not available at any Seattle-area store).

On top of that, Sony announced its five free Blu-Ray movies promotion two days after I picked up the console, so I had to return it and repurchase it. Now, just a few hours after I finally cracked the box, word leaked out that there will most likely be a $100 price cut on July 12, right after Sony's E3 press conference. Fortunately, I believe Best Buy has 30-day price protection.

First impressions
Right off the bat, the third-party component cables I picked up did not work at all. (Not Sony's fault, per se - except they made me buy them instead of including them in the box, and Fry's has never, ever received any first-party cables for some reason so I ended up buying Asid or some such brand.)

After getting the PS3 up and running with composite, I tried to create a PlayStation Network account, but the UI told me to had to go under System settings to perform an update first. This is such a rookie mistake: Why not just offer me the update right then and there? Why must I go digging through the UI to find some obscure menu choice? I held the Xbox 360 to the fire for the same issue back when it launched, and a year later they fixed it. Sony has had an extra year to learn from Microsoft's mistakes, and they chose not to. But I'll pick apart the UI in more detail in coming weeks.

The update itself took about 30 minutes to download and install, even over a reasonably fast DSL line. This gave me enough time to start charging my wireless controller and run out Best Buy to pick up an official component cable.

My next stop was to create that account and start downloading stuff from the PlayStation Store. I only have the one retail game to last me until another compelling console exclusive is released (Lair looks promising), so I wanted to download flOw, Gran Turismo HD, the Ninja Gaiden Sigma demo, trial versions of some puzzle games and some HD videos. At first I was impressed that I could stack nine or so downloads with ease. But I was annoyed when some downloads (such as Folding@Home, the application that helps scientists get process data needed to cure diseases while your console is idle) broke the mold and demanded to be downloaded in the foreground, interrupting my queue. (After all that, it also required another update since the first file was out of date!) Also, one video download errored out, and there's no obvious interface to restart it. And everything downloads hell-a slow.

So I went to see the Transformers movie and came back. The PS3 was still downloading, with only a couple files complete.

I then popped in a few Blu-Ray movies and was disappointed to learn that my Sixaxis controller makes a crummy remote. I can buy the official Sony remote for $25, but it's Bluetooth - which means I won't even be able to teach my Harmony remote with it. There's apparently a third-party remote that uses a USB dongle to accept IR inputs, so I'm going to investigate that.

For comparison's sake: My launch Xbox 360 came with a basic DVD remote (as a limited time promo), and it was $200 cheaper. With one game, two movies and some accessories, my PS3 cost $735 before tax. (Of course, I'll get $100 worth of free Blu-Ray movies, and possibly $100 back if the price drop rumor is true. So that should soften the blow.)

True confession
All that said, I kinda, uh, well, I really like the PS3. Yes, the UI is clunky. Very clunky, with lots of steps that make no sense (but more on that in my next column). The system costs far too much for what you get, even with all of the current and rumored promotions. And the out-of-box experience leaves a bit to be desired, especially if you have an HDTV.

After playing a few checkpoints of Resistance, floating through fl0w, logging some laps in Gran Turismo, and watching some Blu-Ray and HD downloadable trailers, I am very impressed. The picture and sound are great. I'd even suggest that they rival my Toshiba HD-DVD player (which, truth be told is a bit buggy, and slow to get firmware updates) and Xbox 360, albeit by a narrow margin. I'll still favor the 360 for multiplatform games, since I love the achievement system and would prefer to get some gamerscore than Sixaxis tilt-control features (when they're even implemented).

I do think that Sony can do a lot to improve the customer experience and make the system more appealing to casual gamers. I'll have more to say on that soon enough. But right now, I just want to have some fun with my new console.

And, to my surprise, it is pretty fun - for the moment, at least. Time will tell whether the enjoyment lasts past the honeymoon phase.

Whoa! - Microsoft expands Xbox 360 warranty to 3 years

Xbox 360 Ring of DeathOn the heels of reports that some Xbox 360 owners have seen as many as a dozen systems die and leaks from retailers alleging that failure rates are excessive, Microsoft announced an unprecedented three-year warranty on all consoles that suffer the red ring of death. (For the record, we've just had the one, though one of our 360s does freeze more often than seems right.) The cost of this expanded repair or replace program is expected to exceed $1 billion. If you paid for a repair due to the three flashing lights, Microsoft will reimburse you. Supposedly, improvements to newer consoles should reduce the frequency of failures. Full details on Xbox.com. Of course, this only fixes half of the problem. The related issue of orphaned Marketplace content still remains and will apparently affect a lot more people in the next few years...

Wii Virtual Console - Yoshi and more

This week's Wii Virtual Console update includes:
  • Air "Zonk" (TurboGrafx) - $6
  • Mach Rider (NES) - $5
  • Yoshi (NES) - $5

Confirmed! - PS3 price cut and 80GB model announced

Starting today, the PlayStation 3 is officially $500 for the 60GB/HDMI edition, with the 40GB model being dropped and an 80GB version due to hit at the $600 price point. This new model will come bundled with MotorStorm but will also be the first in the U.S. to lack the PS2 "Emotion Engine" chip - meaning backward compatibility is a far-less effective software emulation only. The other interesting news is Sony's justification for the larger hard drive: It plans to launch more HD downloadable content, including a movie service to compete with Microsoft's Xbox Live Marketplace...

E3 Round-up - Microsoft

Halo 3 Xbox 360Here's what was announced at the Microsoft press event at E3:
  • A Halo 3-branded Xbox 360 will be released in September (and, yes, it will be green), but there's no price yet or details on whether it will contain the "red ring of death"-resistant cooler chipset also announced this week
  • The 360 controller snap-on keyboard (aka Chatpad) will cost $30 when it's released this September (if Microsoft loves September so much, why don't they just marry it?!)
  • A multiplayer beta for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is coming soon, so keep an eye on CharlieOscarDelta.com when it recovers from the traffic tonight
  • Golden Axe and Sonic the Hedgehog were released on Xbox Live Arcade, along with the Blue Dragon demo and videos for Halo 3, Mass Effect, Too Human, Project Gotham Racing 4 (with motorbikes), and many more now and over the next few days (but the Resident Evil 5 video won't be posted until July 26)
  • Mass Effect is due in November
  • An Xbox 360 version of the DVD board game Scene It is coming; the $60 pricetag includes four custom controllers (take that, Rock Band!)
  • Gears of War and Viva Pinata are being ported to Windows - and Gears has bonus chapters and a map editor
  • A new Viva Pinata party game for 360 is due later this year (what do you bet it's September!)
  • Disney is offering up some of its movies to the Xbox Live Marketplace including Alice In Wonderland and The Aristocats (don't get too excited; remember, you can only rent the movies)
All in all some good news for the fans, but no stunners. Tomorrow we'll see what Nintendo and Sony have in store...

E3 Round-up - Nintendo

Wii Fit YogaNintendo's E3 press conference centered around a new Wii channel, a new fitness program and - most importantly - when all of the games are going to hit (well, all except for THAT one):
  • Wii Fit is a new "game" that includes a balance board and four modes: aerobics, muscle training, yoga and balance exercise; no word yet on pricing or what other sorts of games might support this new input device
  • The Check Mii Out channel lets you pimp your Miis and enter them in contests
  • Mario Galaxy is due out Nov. 12, Super Smash Bros. Brawl on Dec. 3 and Mario Kart Wii (Wii Wheel included!) in early 2008
  • Online play is coming; watch for it in Mario Kart Wii, Madden 08, Mario Strikers Charged, FIFA Soccer 08, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker and Guitar Hero III
  • The Wii Zapper is a forthcoming $20 gun accessory (aka hunk of plastic) that holds the Wii-mote and nunchuk to help you enjoy shooter games such as Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles

E3 Round-up - Sony

PlayStation Portable SlimSony's big news is the PlayStation Portable Slim will launch in September and October in limited edition packs for $200. The big new feature (apart from the thinner form factor) is a video-out port so you can stream your reduced quality videos and UMD programs to a TV (oh boy). The Daxter PSP Entertainment Pack features a silver PSP Slim, the Daxter game, a Family Guy UMD and 1GB Memory Stick Duo. On Oct. 9, it's joined by the Star Wars Battlefront PSP Entertainment Pack, which includes a white PSP Slim with Darth Vader silkscreen design and Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron. It appears you'll also eventually be able to get the newly redesigned PSP Slim in black for $170.

Other news from the Sony press conference at E3:
  • Due in 2008, Metal Gear Solid 4 will be a PS3 exclusive, and also the last in the series
  • Unreal Tournament 3 is a PS3 exclusive due in 2007, and it will permit PC mods to be downloaded (though only through PlayStation Network; wonder if they'll charge for them)
  • PlayStation Home, due this fall, will include a mobile phone component that enables pictures from your phone to decorate your space and provides remote access to some PS3 features
  • Gran Turismo 5 Prologue will add online play when it's released later this year
  • SOCOM: Confrontation is due for holiday release
  • Echochrome is a puzzle game that will get released as a download and features M.C. Escher-style graphics to make your head spin
  • NCSoft (known for Lineage, Guild Wars, Auto Assault and City of Heroes) is up to something for the PS3, but nothing specific has been announced (it smells like an MMO, though)
It will be interesting to see if Sony ponies up a bunch of PlayStation Network videos and other downloadable goodies, since they posted zip last week...

So far, the PlayStation Store only has some free E3 preview videos:
  • Metal Gear Solid 4

Xbox Live Marketplace - The Bigs demo, more videos and themes

Microsoft continues to run circles around Sony with its huge cache of downloadable demos, videos and dashboard themes - totalling 78 items in three days. (Hopefully it will end soon; this is exhausting - and filling up my second 20GB drive!) Newest additions include:
  • The Bigs and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix demos (free)
  • Videos for Army of Two, Assassin's Creed, Bee Movie Game, BlackSite: Area 51, The Bourne Conspiracy, Crash Bandicoot, Dynasty Warriors: Gundam, Eternal Sonata, Fatal Inertia, Fracture, Frontlines: Fuel of War, Half-Life 2: The Orange Box, Harry Potter amd the Order of the Phoenix game, The Last Remnant, Mercenaries 2, skate, NCAA 08, NHL 08, Spider-Man: Friend or Foe, Stranglehold, Tony Hawk's Proving Ground, Too Human and Two Worlds (all free)
  • Themes for Stranglehold, Vampire Rain and the girls of Need for Speed ProStreet ($1.88 each) and a picture pack for Stranglehold ($1.25)

PlayStation Network - Nucleus game, New Goblin add-on and video

After releasing those 18 E3 videos on Wednesday, Sony added Nucleus, a $10 downloadable game for the PS3 that includes a three-level free trial, plus the New Goblin playable character for Spider-Man 3 ($6) and a Stranglehold video (free)...

Rumor Patrol - $500 PS3 won't last

If you're thinking about getting the PlayStation 3 at the new $500 price, you might want to do it soon. Rumors suggest that when Sony introduces the 80GB version in August, it will phase out the 60GB model entirely. If so, we'd be back at $600 - with a bonus game (MotorStorm) but without PS2 hardware compatibility. So this price drop may actually be a liquidation scheme, with Sony poised to reduce its per unit cost (the Emotion Engine chip no doubt costs more than an extra 20GB storage and a game) while suggesting greater value that's only there if you really love off-road racing and don't care too much about backward compatibility...

UPDATE: This rumor has been confirmed. The $500 PS3 will only be available while supplies of the 60GB model last, though Sony claims it has "ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers in this territory for several months to come." The fact is: Sony can't afford to take a deep loss on its console for too long - and what's to stop them from taking some leftover 60GB units, swapping out the hard drives and slipping in a copy of MotorStorm?

July 16, 2007

Wii Virtual Console - Paper Mario and more

This week Nintendo brings back the N64 classic that set the stage for a recent Wii hit, downloadable from the Virtual Console online store:
  • Paper Mario (N64) - $10
  • Balloon Fight (NES) - $5
  • Silent Debuggers (TurboGrafx) - $6

First Look - PSP Slim

PlayStation Portable SlimThe PlayStation Portable Slim, announced at E3 last week, actually has several new features. In addition to the new video port for outputting UMD movies and videos to a TV, the system includes:
  • Twice as much memory, enabling a cache that should make games load faster
  • USB charging, so your system will power up (instead of draining away) while connected to a PC
  • A better battery, though you probably won't see much improvement in typical day-to-day use
Now for the bad news: It doesn't come with the AV cable (no price announced), and your original PSP remotes won't work. Oh, and if you play games on your TV, there will a black border on all sides...

Whoa! - Top Xbox exec steps down

Microsoft VP Peter Moore - who headed up a rousing show at E3 last week in which he invoked (but did not show) the Halo and Grand Theft Auto tattoos he got to promote the Xbox 360 platform - has resigned to head up EA Sports at Electronic Arts. Moore joined Microsoft in 2003 after being Sega's president and helping launch the Dreamcast. He will be replaced by Don Mattrick, an ex-EA president...

Xbox Live Marketplace - Bomberman Live, more

This week's crop of Xbox Live Marketplace downloads is a little light after E3 week, but does include two new Xbox Live Arcade titles:
  • Bomberman Live ($10)
  • Yie Ar Kung-Fu ($5)
  • Transformers themes ($1.88 each) and picture packs ($2.50 each)
  • Carcassonne pictures ($1)
  • Fable 2 E3 demo video (free)
Also, the Lost Planet map packs that previously required cash to play are free starting on Friday, July 20...

July 19, 2007

PlayStation Network - Castlevania, more videos

The PlayStation Store's big addition this week is Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for the PS3 and PSP. This classic game rings in at $10, nearly twice what the other original PlayStation titles in the store will run you. If free is more your speed, there are videos for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Heavenly Sword, inFamous and Ratchet & Clank Future plus a movie trailer for Resident Evil: Extinction...

News Flash - PSP Slim battery life

Due to the need for a thinner battery, the PSP Slim only gets about the same battery life as the original PSP - about 3-6 hours. However, if you have an original PSP battery, you'll be able to put it into the new hardware and get closer to 10 hours between charges. There's only one problem: It won't fit. The good news is that if you don't mind your Slim having an odd bulge, Sony will sell you an irregularly shaped backplate to cover it (price not yet announced, but how much can a piece of plastic cost?!)...

Xbox Live Marketplace - The Darkness, Juiced 2 demos

Microsoft just can't quit posting new downloads for the Xbox 360. Just in time for the weekend, you can get your hands on demos for The Darkness and Juiced 2: Hot Import Nights. There's also news that Unreal Tournament 3 will be a PS3 exclusive only for a few months (the key words "this year" have been carefully carved into every Sony statement about this release). PC and Xbox 360 releases are also planned...

Try This Game - Chore Wars

Chore WarsIf doing chores around the house or workplace isn't nearly as compelling as a round of Oblivion or World of Warcraft, now you can earn experience points for those important real world tasks you keep neglecting. Chore Wars is a PC "game" that lets you form a party of intrepid dusters, vacuumers and all around cleaner uppers. When you knock out a task, enter it into the Web site and see what happens (you're on the honor system). If there's a chore no one likes to do, you can set it to give more points, which level you up depending on how much you use your mind or muscles. Combat with the Dust Monster Under the Stairs is optional, and all treasures found are virtual prizes. But it might just be what it takes to make housework fun for the whole family. Chore Wars is free, but only keeps a limited history unless one member of your party pays a one-time $10 fee...

Wii Round-up - Virtual Console, Wii-mote control

This week's Wii Virtual Console update includes:
  • Devil's Crush (TurboGrafx) - $6
  • Kirby's Dream Course (SNES) - $8
  • Shining Force (Genesis) - $8
And if your Wii isn't getting much play right now as you wait for the big holiday titles to roll in, now you can use your Wii-mote to control your PC or Mac. These are beta programs (read: still buggy) and your computer will need Bluetooth, but it could prove useful for presentations and such:

News Flash - PS3 firmware updated to v1.9

Sony just released a v1.9 patch for the PlayStation 3 dashboard. New features include the ability to customize the background with a photo, remote disc eject, emoticons for messages, the option to rearrange the order of downloaded games and demos, playback for AVCHD videos, upscaling of audio CDs over HDMI and optical connection and some new display options for Blu-Ray videos and backward compatible games. A decent update, but it does make you wonder what's to come in v2.0...

Act Fast! - Free PaRappa the Rapper soundtrack

Sony and PSP Fanboy released a free PaRappa the Rapper soundtrack to promote the new PSP version of the pioneering rhythm game. It has already officially been pulled, but at this writing you could still download it with this link (19.5MB)...

Rumor Patrol - Xbox 360 to get $50 price cut?

A $50 price drop for the Xbox 360 is rumored to hit August 8, just in time for a few highly anticipated late summer releases such as Madden 2008, BioShock and the Blue Dragon Japanese-style RPG...

Xbox Live Marketplace - Where to start?!

You'd think E3 would have exhausted the team that loads up Xbox Live Marketplace with fresh content, but this week's pipeline might be even more full with a flood of in-game add-ons, demos, videos and the promise of daily content and coverage for San Diego Comic-Con 2007:
  • Wing Commander Arena ($10) and Super Contra ($5)
  • Splinter Cell: Double Agent content (free) with 2 new multiplayer maps, 4 new challenges and the Spy Girl playable character with 3 outfits

Price Drop - Xbox 360 HD-DVD Player

The Xbox 360 HD-DVD Player add-on drive drops $20 to $179 on August 1, and it now includes an offer from Toshiba to get 5 free HD-DVD movies off a list of 15 eligible titles (PDF) - similar to the recent Blu-Ray offer, you pick from categories to spread the weight of the promotion across participating studios...

PlayStation Network - Heavenly Sword demo, wallpaper, more

The PlayStation Store has a handful of free goodies for your PS3 this week (everyone has one now, right?!):
  • Heavenly Sword demo and two wallpapers
  • Actual gameplay footage from Metal Gear Solid 4, plus videos for Haze and Resident Evil 5 (the same one Xbox Live Marketplace just posted),
  • Movie trailers for Across the Universe, 30 Days of Night, August Rush and Vacancy
Blogworthy aside:

While looking for the official details on the Sony Web site (I finally had to run downstairs and jot them on a pad of paper while logged into my PS3), I stumbled across this little PR nugget: "PlayStation fans: feel free to throw up your arms in unanimous rejoicing. Today, Sony Computer Entertainment America announced in a press release that PS3 sales have increased by more than 135% at the company's top five retailers."

Uh, unaminous rejoicing? That's got to be some of the worst PR speak ever (and I should know, as a marketing copywriter myself). That's like saying, "The long dark winter has ended, now that we're only getting beaten 3-to-1 by Nintendo." C'mon, just give us the facts - we'll decide if we want to celebrate something as ridiculous as a company that we don't even work for dropping its price to realize a notable (though not spectacular) uptick in sales. It reminds me of a so-called benefit I once saw posted on a Microsoft marketing Web site for Mac Office: "Full of useful goodness." Oh boy, let me just go get my credit card. And my party hat...

UPDATE: I just noticed that this "news" item on the Sony site is credited to IGN's Ryan Clements, a so-called independent gaming news source. That actually makes it worse than if a PR drone had written it...

Has anyone filled their Wii memory with Virtual Console titles yet? So far, I've only bought the original Ecco the Dolphin and Paper Mario 64...

Rumor Patrol - Xbox 360 price cut x3?

Based on the most recent leak, it appears the Xbox 360 is getting not one but three price adjustments, one for each model:
  • Xbox 360 - $50 drop to $350
  • Xbox 360 Elite - $30 drop to $450
  • Xbox 360 Core - $20 drop to $280 (before adding a memory card or hard drive)
As a bonus, at least one retailer (Circuit City) is including Rockstar Table Tennis free with the standard 360. Expect official word in the next week...
