Blog - Busy Gamer News: Now with 100% more ads!

So, you may have noticed the new ads. That's right, I've joined the ranks of sites that try to earn enough money to stay afloat. I've run this site in its various incarnations for 3+ years without any ad support. But I can't afford to continue to do that, and I truly don't think it will make a difference to you, the busy gamer. With Google ads, I don't pick what's there (though I can filter to some degree), so I certainly won't be catering to a bunch of random links. And Gamefly is a service I can (and frequently do!) wholeheartedly recommend. I've been using them for several years, and it's a great alternative to buying a bunch of full-priced games. The best part is: If you rent a game and decide you do want to buy it, you'll typically get a discount. So Gamefly represents the other sort of advertiser I'll court: The ones I already stand behind. I do sometimes mention them in my reviews, not so much because to pander to the advertiser as to recommend a place to rent games for portables, which are typically not available at your local rental stores. So if you want to help this site, you know what to do. Also, tell your friends, since best kept secrets often wither and die on the vine...

Games for Vista - The bad, the hideous and the pretty

Windows VistaThe 800-pound gorilla that is Windows Vista landed this week, and the news isn't all good:
  • Unless your PC is relatively new and fast and packed with lots of RAM, you should probably skip the upgrade and get a new machine
  • Not all games run fine on this new operating system - some run faster and some like Half-Life 2, well, don't - so even if your PC is upgradeable, you might want to wait for the inevitable service pack and driver updates
  • Some games (particularly casual games) are having problems with the new OS, for instance not running at all or only on a machine where the user is an admin
  • If you're an online gamer, you'll need to install the Flash player via ActiveX since it's no longer bundled with Internet Explorer
  • On the bright side, MSN Games has launched its Games Enhanced for Vista (mostly enhanced with higher res graphics, though some games have bonus content as well) - Darwinia, Jewel Quest 2, Luxor 2 and Spinword are available now with Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved, Crystal Quest, Bliss Island and 7 Wonders on the way
More good news: Even if you're not running Vista, you can download the new multiplayer Jigsaw Too for Windows Live Messenger and play cooperatively with a friend...

Wii Virtual Console - Super Mario World, others

Super Mario WorldThis week there are some new Wii virtual console game downloads (officially more than Microsoft put out for the Xbox 360 in its first year, albeit without the high-def facelift), including a Mario classic:
  • Super Mario World (SNES) - $8
  • Vigilante (TurboGrafx) - $6
  • Gain Ground (Genesis) - $8

Stupid Marketing Tricks - Old Spice and Xbox 360 points

Old SpiceFor those of you who thought Xbox 360 gamerscore points were just for bragging, Microsoft and Old Spice have a rewards program that could get you some virtual and real world booty. There are a lot of twists and catches, so pay attention. First, you'll be ranked on your annual gamerscore for the year ending Feb. 11. Those with 0-4999 points will be eligible to win an Old Spice Level 1 gamer picture and the downloadable Arcade game Contra. If you're between 5000 and 9999, you can win a Level 2 gamer picture, Contra and 100 Microsoft points. Beyond 10000 points, you're playing for a Level 3 gamer picture, Contra, 200 Microsoft points, a t-shirt and a copy of Fuzion Frenzy 2. How do you win these valuable prizes? Simply link your gamertag to a Windows Live ID and then earn 1500 gamer points between Feb. 12 and Apr. 12. Each winner will get a level bump for the following year, so it's clear this is at least a two year program. FYI: Some prizes (like the shirt and retail game!) have a limited supply, so you're better off scoring sooner than later. Sign ups start Feb. 12 at xbox.com/rewards...

First Look - Half-Life 2 Episode Two

Half-Life 2 Episode TwoValve revealed that Half-Life 2 Episode Two will be released this fall (no actual date, so sometime before the holidays). Better yet, it confirmed that the game will be coming to PS3 and Xbox 360. If you already have the PC version of Half-Life 2, you'll get the "Black Box" edition, which contains Episode Two plus new multiplayer games Portal and Team Fortress 2 - the official descriptions are vague, but they're supposed to be "pioneering," "advanced" and "daring" according to the marketing writer. If you're new to Half-Life 2 or picking up a console edition, you'll want the "Orange Box," which contains all of the new content plus the original Half-Life 2 and Episode One...

Xbox 360 round-up - Microsoft fixing Marketplace purchases, new 360 hardware rumors and more

A black Xbox 360?If you read my recent rant The Xbox 360's downloadable content time bomb, you know that Xbox Live Marketplace content is tied to the console you purchase it on. Which can be a problem if it ever fails. Turns out, Microsoft is working on a fix, according to the March 2007 issue of Official Xbox Magazine. The OXM editors corrected their earlier statement that the issue was "hogwash" and added that their Microsoft sources say "you should expect an update in the near future."

This is good news, since reports suggest one or more reasons why you might want to trade in your 360 for a newer model. First, the rumor of a forthcoming hardware revision with 1080p HDMI output and a bigger bundled hard drive continues to thrive (the latest suggests the console will be black and feature 120GB of storage!). Even if this proves false, word is that newer systems shipping now or very soon will include a DVD drive that's both quieter and faster. Of course, there's no easy way of telling one model from the next on a store shelf - unless Microsoft does unveil a black one.

There's also good news for Marketplace fans, a bunch of new downloads:
  • Root Beer Tapper ($5)
  • Demos of Def Jam: Icon and NBA Street Homecourt (free; Gold members only initially)
  • A new Penny Arcade theme ($1.88) and picture packs ($2.50 each)
  • March Madness team themes ($1.88 each)
  • Small Arms themes ($1.88 each) and picture packs ($1.25 each)
Oh, and that Call of Duty 3 Valor Map pack has been fixed - it's still $10, but now it works when you download it...

A BGN Original - Ye Olde Pickup Lines of Oblivion

Just in time for Valentine's Day, I have assembled a unique daters' training manual for those adventurous souls who frequent Cyrodiil, the realm of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion:

This video was inspired by more than 80 hours of play. As you walk around the world of this deep and immersive single-player game, the characters "notice" your enhanced attributes and shower compliments as you pass. Sometimes what they say sounds like a come on, and certain particularly odd or awkward lines quickly became favorites. Fold in a few risque subplots and out-of-context comments and you have Ye Olde Pickup Lines of Oblivion.

Enjoy! And if you have a moment, share it with your friends and rate the video...

Wii Virtual Console - Kid Icarus, other NES classics

Kid IcarusThis week's Wii Virtual Console update includes three NES classics:
  • Kid Icarus (NES) - $5
  • Kirby's Adventure (NES) - $5
  • Ice Climber (NES) - $5
For those of you who didn't pick up Wii Play...

Rumor Patrol - Oblivion overhaul, PS3 features uncertain

The Elder Scrolls IV: OblivionWord has leaked out from Bethesda Softworks that not only is the PlayStation 3 version of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion getting a graphics facelift, but the PC and Xbox 360 versions will eventually be patched to provide the same pixel shader improvements - though nof other hardware-dependent optimizations such as zippier load times. This will make divining the "definitive" version of the game a bit more difficult, especially since the PS3 edition will include the Knights of the Nine quest line but not other enhancements such as the Mehrune's Razor, Orrery, Thieves' Den or Wizard's Tower add-on packs offered as for-sale downloads on PC and 360. Apparently, the issue is that including them from the start throws off game balance and would require more up-front testing. On the flipside, Sony's PlayStation Network Store is unproven as a mechanism for providing these sorts of in-game content updates - so making them available later isn't certain, though the developers have vowed to work on it once work on the game is complete. There's also a rumor that the PS3 can't actually handle the added content, but it's hard to say if it's truth or fiction propagated by the haters...

Blog: Oblivion pickup lines video is a hit!

Ye Olde Pickup Lines of Oblivion After releasing Ye Olde Pickup Lines of Oblivion into the wilds of YouTube on Sunday, it's taken on a life of its own. In its first full day, it earned the #1 position for its category (Video Games - English) and about #50 for all English-language videos! At this writing, the counter is stuck just below 22,000 views - I expect it will catch up the stats overnight. Ratings (4.5 out of 5 stars!) and comments have been mostly positive, though I quickly learned to turn on approvals when the very first YouTube response contained non-constructive feedback involving donkey genitals. Kotaku, Joystiq and Dubious Quality all posted writeups - though apparently Joystiq readers have a strong anti-YouTube bias and seemed to miss the point that this is a viral video aimed at driving interest in this very cool game and its quirks and not a definitive study of bizarre and possibly illegal mating practices. Oh, and my own stats logs revealed many hits from Bethesda's intranet (hi, guys - great game!).

For the record, I used a DV video camera hooked to my receiver's analog outputs to capture gameplay footage from my Xbox 360. I then used a Firewire cable to download the raw footage to Windows Movie Maker. The original rough cut was 9 minutes, but I cut down the ladies and a few silly subplots to get the final running time under 5 minutes. Some people think it's still too long, but I just couldn't bear to remove the Patrick Stewart lines (pure gold!) or the workshop section (which at least two people found as funny as I did, based on comments). Along the way, I've picked up several suggestions for lines I missed and, ahem, certain activities I might enact should I decide to make a sequel.

On top of all of the YouTube madness, I just got offered a consulting position today, so I'll be going into business for myself. This will ensure I can retain a few free hours for additional video projects, should inspiration strike again.

Speaking of Oblivion, be sure to read today's news post and my recent Busy Gamer Review of the game...

Wii Update - Everybody Votes Channel

Everybody Votes ChannelIf you thought the Wii channels for weather, photos and news were it, get online and download the new Everybody Votes Channel. This simple polling system is surprisingly deep with the game-like ability to try to predict the outcome of a simple two-answer query. Stats show how dialed in you are and whether your outcome predictions are more mainstream than your own personal tastes. Simply register your Mii and then drag the avatar onto your choice of, say, what's the better Valentine's gift: chocolates or roses? Then check back later to see how you did. You'll need both a system update and a free Wii Shop download to get this new feature, which shows Nintendo does have plans to fill the remaining dashboard slots with more than just Virtual Console games. Then again, they better come up with a way for you to save these files somewhere other than system memory, or you'll soon be awkwardly juggling downloads between SD cards and on-board storage...

Try This Game - Myst Online

Myst OnlineIf one of your seminal gaming experiences was pointing and clicking through D'ni with Atrus, Sirrus and Achenar, you can try the Myst Online multiplayer world (adapted from the launched and then canceled Uru Live) for free when you sign up for a Gametap free trial. (For the record: Not a sponsor.) Well, actually only the first taste is free - you get limited access to just one stage and the chance to hang out in certain public neighborhoods. OK, and you can't even fully customize your avatar. Hey, what did you expect for free...

Blog - Best laptop for work and play?

Alienware Area-51 m5790So, if you read my blog post from the other day, you'd know that I'm about to embark on a new career as a consultant/freelancer. One of my first duties is to buy a laptop that I can haul around for work. But I also want a machine that will do justice to the latest games, so I can keep up on new technologies (e.g., Vista) and continue reviewing titles for this site (which, if traffic continues to grow, could eventually be a revenue stream for my business!). Heck, I may even indulge in that anathema to busy gamers everywhere: World of Warcraft.

So I'm looking for a good laptop. Right now, I'm eyeing the Alienware Area-51 m5790 built out into the midrange. I don't need the overclocked CPU or high-end video card - it's already going to smoke my 2-year-old HP Pavilion desktop. I'm planning to max out the RAM and go for the 7200 rpm RAID 0 drives and DVD burner so I'll be good to go for video editing should I decide to put together any more fun YouTube clips. Does anyone have the m5790 yet? Is it as good as it looks? Are there better, more cost-effective alternatives? And how are you liking Vista so far?

For the record, I've already ruled out a MacBook - despite my deep Apple roots and the dual-boot possibility, I really just need a solid Windows machine right now. So, what are you using? What are some of the gotchas? This will be the first laptop I've bought since a 68K PowerBook in the mid-'90s, so any tips are welcome...

Wii Virtual Console - Donkey Kong Country, others

Donkey Kong CountryNintendo continues to show up Microsoft's hit-or-miss Xbox Live Arcade Wednesdays with its now highly consistent Wii Virtual Console Mondays. This week, look for:
  • Donkey Kong Country (SNES) - $8
  • The Legend of Kage (NES) - $5
  • New Adventure Island (TurboGrafx) - $6
  • Streets of Rage (Genesis) - $8
Sure, they're all recycled old-school titles with no new content - but there are some good games and it's more convenient than stashing all those aging consoles around your house...

Play This Game - Bruce Lee remake

Bruce LeeIf you're an old school gamer (meaning you went to school in the '80s), you no doubt remember Bruce Lee for the Commodore 64. It was a simple platformer that was so addictive, you could play it through many, many times. Well, there's a PC remake of it - and best of all, it's free to download and play. It even includes the multiplayer mode and joystick support. Yeah, it's old news - but if it's new to you, get downloading. C'mon, the game is only 644K...

First Look - Guitar Hero II on Xbox 360

Guitar Hero II for Xbox 360 If you're already drooling over the prospect of Guitar Hero II for the Xbox 360 in April, you'll be happy to know there will be some new, exclusive tracks (in addition to the songs from the PS2 version):
  • Rancid: "Salvation"
  • Pearl Jam: "Life Wasted"
  • Iron Maiden: "The Trooper"
  • Alice Cooper: "Billion Dollar Babies"
  • Deep Purple: "Hush"
  • Rick Derringer: "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo"
  • My Chemical Romance: "Dead"
  • Toadies: "Possum Kingdom"
There will also be a couple of surprise unlockable tracks and, eventually, downloadable track packs to expand the game further. Alas, there's still no word on a wireless guitar controller or online cooperative play...

First Look - Spiderman 3 for PS3

Spiderman 3Finally, a somewhat compelling reason to pick up a PlayStation 3! Taking a page from Microsoft's original Xbox playbook, Sony will be offering PS3 exclusive features for its upcoming Spiderman 3 game. The so-called Collector's Edition is slated to include the New Goblin as a playable character, complete with motion-controlled maneuvers and bonus race challenges that require the Sixaxis controller's special capabilities. Now, since Spiderman is a Sony movie property, the only question is whether this qualifies as a monopoly move...

Wait, Don't Buy That Game! - New Xbox 360 Platinum Hits

If you've somehow managed to avoid buy some of these best-selling Xbox 360 games, you'd be better off waiting until March 16 when they are re-released as Platinum Hits and drop down to $30 each:
  • Battlefield 2: Modern Combat
  • Burnout Revenge
  • Call of Duty 2
  • Dead or Alive 4
  • Fight Night Round 3
  • Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
  • Top Spin 2
  • Rockstar Games presents Table Tennis
These join the first wave of 360 "hits," which included Kameo, Perfect Dark Zero, Project Gotham Racing 3 and Need for Speed: Most Wanted. It always surprises me that console makers announce this stuff so far in advance. But as long as they do, I'll be glad to report it so you can save $10 to $30 per game...

Wii Virtual Console - Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

This week, Nintendo released The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on the Wii Virtual Console. If you missed out on the limited edition GameCube disc that shipped with Wind Waker preorders, you'll want to shell out the $10 for this download - even if rumble doesn't work with Virtual Console games...

Xbox Live Marketplace - Alien Hominid HD, others

Alien Hominid HDBy the time you read this, Alien Hominid HD should be out on Xbox Live Marketplace for $10, complete with 16 levels, 7 mini-games and even multiplayer modes (2 on one console for the main game, and up to 4 locally and/or on Live for the minis). Other new downloads include:
  • Paperboy ($5)
  • Four new playable Crackdown agents (free; Gold members only)
  • Demos of Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 multiplayer and Major League Baseball 2K7 (free)
  • DDR Universe songs ($10 for 10, or $1.25 apiece) - includes music by Naoki featuring Paula Terry, Naoki featuring MIU, The Dandy Warhols, Neverakka, KTz, d-complex, Jonny Dynamite, Intuition, R.A.S.T. and Luv Unlimited
  • Crackdown themes ($1.88 each) and picture packs ($2 each)
  • DDR Universe theme and picture pack ($1.88 each)
  • RoboBlitz theme ($1.88) and picture pack ($1.25)
  • Borat theme and pictures (free)
  • Battlestar Galactica theme ($1.88) and pictures ($1)
  • Videos of Unreal Tournament III, the 2006 water balloon publicity stunt and a how-to for the XNA Creators Club (free)
For some reason whenever Marketplace items for a game appear for purchase the same week the game releases, it feels like the publisher skimmed features to increase the purchase price. At least wait a week until avid players have made it through most of the game disc content before shilling bonus content, or let us feel the love by offering the first taste for free...

Misery Loves Company - World of Warcraft armory site launches and crashes

World of Warcraft Armory Blizzard launched an ambitious Web repository called The Armory designed to display real-time World of Warcraft game data on characters, arena teams and guilds in a user-friendly format. It's a great way to show off your characters to friends. Only problem is that the site is already down, no doubt overwhelmed by the hordes of avid players. What, did someone forget to stress test the site prior to launch? Here's a tip: Launch it as an open beta, so that way if it crashes you can thank everyone for helping make the final product better. Oh wait, the site came up and it is marked Beta! Wonder if that was always there, or hurriedly added when it crashed. Either way, nice save...
